A BitLocker recovery screen can appear without warning after a BIOS update, and if the 48-digit key is nowhere to be found, a busy professional can lose a working week. This guide is for anyone who keeps accounts, client files or study material on a Windows laptop and wants to find the key now, store it safely and check it is the right one. It takes about fifteen minutes and needs no special software.
How do I find and save my BitLocker recovery key?
Short answer: Sign in at account.microsoft.com on your phone and open the recovery keys page for your Microsoft account. If the key is not there, check Settings, Privacy and security, Device encryption on the laptop, or ask your office IT team. Then print the key or write it on paper and keep it away from the laptop. Do all this before you update the BIOS.
Why does this matter before a BIOS update?
BIOS (the small program that starts the laptop before Windows loads) is something BitLocker watches. When it changes, BitLocker may not recognise the start-up and may ask for the recovery key before it opens your files. This is a safety feature, not a fault.
It has happened on real PCs. HP published an advisory that an early-April 2026 BIOS update for some HP business notebooks, desktops and workstations could put Windows 11 into a BitLocker recovery loop, reported by Windows Latest on 26 May 2026. Microsoft also lists a BitLocker recovery prompt as a known case when the new 2023 Secure Boot certificates arrive on some PCs. So updates are fine; surprises are the problem. The Secure Boot certificate change is a second such case.
Where to look for the key
Step by step: save the key from the PC
Step 1: Check that BitLocker is on
Open Settings, then Privacy and security, then Device encryption (some PCs show Manage BitLocker or BitLocker Drive Encryption in Control Panel). The wording can differ slightly between versions. Some Home editions offer a simpler Device encryption instead of full BitLocker. If neither appears, your drive may not be locked at all.
Step 2: Back up the key
In BitLocker Drive Encryption choose Back up your recovery key. You can save to your Microsoft account, save to a file or print it. Printing to PDF and keeping it only on the same laptop does not count; the copy must be somewhere else.
Step 3: Read the key and the Key ID
Open Command Prompt as administrator, type manage-bde -protectors -get C: and press Enter. It shows the 48-digit Numerical Password and its ID. The ID is what you match against the Key ID on the recovery screen. If the command gives an error, BitLocker may be off or the drive letter may differ.
Step 4: Store it where you can reach it
- Write it on paper and keep it away from the laptop bag.
- Save a photo or file in your own cloud storage, not only on the laptop.
- Note the Key ID next to it, so you know which laptop it belongs to.
Before you update the BIOS
With the key saved, you can update. Some people also suspend BitLocker (a temporary pause that lets one restart pass without the key prompt) from Manage BitLocker before a BIOS update, then turn it back on afterwards. Do this only if you are comfortable with it and your laptop maker does not advise otherwise. Do not turn BitLocker off completely or skip saving the key because you plan to suspend it. Follow our step-by-step BIOS update guide and keep the charger plugged in. Do not switch the laptop off while the BIOS update is running.
What if the blue recovery screen appears and I have no key?
Stop and do not try random digits or reset the PC. Check the four places above, including old emails. Our guides on BitLocker drive recovery and recovering a BitLocker drive without the key explain what is and is not possible. Without the key, the data may be impossible to open, so this is why the saving step matters.
Shared accounts, power cuts and filing deadlines
Accountants and small firms often use a laptop for tax filings and client data, often signed in with a work or personal account that someone else set up. Ask who created the account before you assume the key is saved. Power cuts are the second risk: an update cut off by a power failure can end in a recovery screen or a laptop that will not start. Keep the charger connected, and work on a day when your office is open, not late on a Friday before a filing deadline.
When to get help
- The recovery screen appears and none of your saved keys match the Key ID.
- The laptop returns to the recovery screen after every restart.
- A BIOS update was interrupted and the laptop will not start.
- You are not sure BitLocker is on and the laptop holds important client files.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Make a small habit of it: the day you set up a laptop, save the recovery key to two places, one on paper and one in cloud storage. Then check once a year that you can still open them. A key you cannot find is the same as no key, and finding it takes ten minutes on a calm day.
