Three hours into a render, the laptop stopped cooling
Short answer: A content creator’s MSI Titan GT77 with an RTX 4090 mobile GPU crashed three hours into a DaVinci Resolve colour grade render with GPU acceleration. Temperatures in the logs showed the GPU core hit 108°C before the thermal shutdown. On the bench: the right cooling fan had seized completely — the bearing had failed, causing the fan blades to stop at a 45° angle against the shroud. The VRAM thermal pads (thin silicone sheets that transfer heat from the video memory chips to the heatsink above them) had hardened to nearly zero compliance. Combined repair: ₹13,500. The Titan now renders the same project in under 90 minutes.
What the bench found
Fan bearing failure and temperature log analysis
The GPU temperature log (pulled from HWiNFO session history stored on the SSD) showed a clear pattern: GPU fan RPM climbed to 4,800 RPM for the first 90 minutes, then abruptly dropped to zero while GPU temperature continued climbing. Fan RPM at zero while GPU temperature is above 90°C is an unambiguous fan failure signal. The left fan was functional but the single failed right fan cut the total airflow to approximately 40% of designed capacity. The bearing failure itself was caused by a dry bearing running without lubrication after the original factory grease had evaporated over 18 months of daily use in a room consistently above 30°C ambient. Replacement fan assemblies sourced: ₹6,200.
VRAM thermal pad assessment
The RTX 4090 mobile uses GDDR6X memory chips (the high-speed video memory modules on the GPU board) arranged around the main GPU die. Each chip requires its own thermal pad to transfer heat to the copper heatpipe above it. On this unit, the pads had hardened from their factory specification of approximately 2.0W/mK (watts per metre-Kelvin, the measure of how effectively a material conducts heat) to an estimated 0.4W/mK — nearly non-conductive. Replacement with 3.0W/mK thermal pads of the correct thickness: ₹4,800. GPU and CPU thermal paste was also replaced. Post-repair validation
After repair, idle GPU temperature in a 32°C room: 42°C (was 58°C before repair). Peak GPU temperature during the same 3-hour DaVinci Resolve render: 84°C (was 108°C before fan seizure). The render completed without incident. The owner was advised to schedule a preventive thermal service at the 18-month mark, and to set a GPU fan curve in MSI Afterburner to maintain minimum 30% fan speed at all times — never letting the fans spin-stop cycle that cools and re-heats the bearing grease.
Gaming laptops as professional workstations in India
The RTX 4090 mobile segment has been adopted by a growing community of Indian video editors and 3D artists who use gaming laptops for professional rendering work. This is a valid use case — the GPU performance is genuine and the portability matters. But the thermal assumptions are different from a desktop workstation. A desktop RTX 4090 sits in a case with 200W of dedicated GPU cooler capacity; the same GPU mobile version has roughly 40% of that cooling headroom. In Indian summer ambient temperatures, that gap matters more. Annual cooling maintenance is not optional for a laptop being used as a rendering workstation.

Signs to act on
If GPU temperature exceeds 95°C during normal gaming or rendering, or if renders that used to complete now crash partway through, or if you hear a change in fan sound (grinding, rattling, or a fan that suddenly goes quiet during a heavy load), bring it in for thermal inspection.

The VRAM thermal pad is the component that distinguishes gaming laptop thermal service from a basic paste swap. Most general service shops replace CPU paste and call it done. On an RTX 4090 mobile, the VRAM thermal pads run hotter than the CPU paste in a sustained render workload, and they degrade faster. A full thermal service that skips the VRAM pads is an incomplete service. Always ask whether the pads are being replaced, not just the paste.
