What should I check when buying a refurbished MacBook in India?
Short answer: Before buying any used MacBook in India, check these seven things in order: Activation Lock status, battery cycle count, serial number legitimacy, screen condition, keyboard and trackpad function, port integrity, and macOS update eligibility. The single most important check — and the one most buyers skip — is the Activation Lock status. A MacBook locked to a previous owner's Apple ID is a paperweight regardless of how good the price looks. Everything else is fixable; an Activation Lock without the original owner available is not.
The 7-point refurbished MacBook checklist
Check 1: Activation Lock — the most critical step
Activation Lock (Apple's device security feature that ties the MacBook to its owner's Apple ID) can be checked before you meet the seller. Visit checkcoverage.apple.com, enter the MacBook's serial number (found on the bottom case or in Settings → About This Mac), and confirm the Find My Mac status. If the page shows "Find My is on" or the device is linked to an iCloud account, the Activation Lock is active. Do not buy a MacBook with an active Activation Lock unless the seller can unlock it in front of you. This problem affects a surprisingly high percentage of second-hand MacBook listings on Indian platforms — including OLX, Quikr, and some reseller shops in Hyderabad and Mumbai.
Check 2: Battery cycle count
On the MacBook, hold Option and click the Apple menu → System Information → Power. The "Cycle Count" number tells you how many complete charge-discharge cycles the battery has experienced. Apple's MacBook batteries are rated for around 1,000 cycles before capacity drops below 80%. Under 300 cycles is excellent for a refurbished device. Between 300–600 cycles is acceptable. Over 800 cycles and you should factor a battery replacement cost of ₹4,500–₹8,500 into the negotiated price. Also check "Maximum Capacity" — below 80% means the battery is already degraded and needs immediate replacement.
Check 3: Serial number and coverage status
The same Apple coverage checker (checkcoverage.apple.com) will confirm if the device has active AppleCare, if it is listed as stolen or lost by Apple, and its original purchase date. Never buy a MacBook whose serial number shows "Replacement Device" or whose coverage status cannot be verified — these are red flags for grey-market or unreported damage repairs. Check 4: Screen and display health
Open a pure white web page (type about:blank in a browser) and examine the screen in a bright room. Look for dead pixels (small black or coloured dots that never change), backlight bleeding (uneven brightness around the edges, common in older MacBook Pros), and display flickering when you tilt the lid. On Retina display MacBooks (all models from 2012 onwards), run the screen at the highest resolution to spot any delamination (the screen layers separating, which causes a white or rainbow film appearance). Any screen defect that is not acknowledged by the seller should be reflected in a ₹3,000–₹8,000 price reduction.
Check 5: Keyboard and trackpad
Type every key — including function keys and special characters. MacBook butterfly keyboards (used in 2016–2019 models) are notorious for key failures caused by dust; even a single grain of dust under a key mechanism can cause it to stop registering. The newer scissors-switch keyboards (2020 onwards) are far more reliable. Test the trackpad for physical click response across the full surface — top, bottom, left, right, and centre. Force Touch (the taptic feedback mechanism that simulates a click without physical movement) should feel uniform. A rattling or unresponsive trackpad often signals a swollen battery pushing against it from below — a safety issue, not just a repair cost.
Check 6: Port integrity
Plug a USB-C cable into every Thunderbolt port and verify the device charges and recognises the connection. Thunderbolt ports are the most-used and most-damaged connectors on a MacBook — bent pins or oxidised contacts from charging in dusty environments are common. A port that charges intermittently will only get worse. Port repair typically costs ₹1,500–₹3,500 at a competent repair service. Also check the MagSafe connector (on MacBooks that have it) for bent or corroded pins.
Check 7: macOS update eligibility
Go to the Apple menu → System Settings → General → Software Update and check which macOS version the device can run. A MacBook that cannot update to the latest macOS will stop receiving security patches — a significant risk for professional use. As a rule, Intel MacBooks from 2017 and earlier are already at end-of-support. Apple Silicon MacBooks (M1 onwards) will receive support for many more years.
