Your Word document is gone — what are the recovery options?
Short answer: There are four distinct recovery layers for a missing Word document, and most users only check the first one. In order of likelihood: Word’s AutoRecover folder (unsaved drafts after a crash); the Windows Recycle Bin or macOS Trash (accidentally deleted saved files); OneDrive or SharePoint Version History (cloud-saved documents with version rollback); and finally data recovery software like Recuva for permanently deleted local files. Work through them in this order before spending anything.
How to recover a lost or unsaved Word document
Step 1 — Check AutoRecover on Windows
Word saves a recovery copy every 10 minutes automatically. The files are stored in a hidden folder. To find them: open Word, go to File → Info → Manage Document → Recover Unsaved Documents. This opens the AutoRecover folder directly. Look for a file with a name matching your document (it will end in .asd rather than .docx). Open it and immediately save it as a proper .docx file to a known location.
On Windows 11/10, the AutoRecover path is: C:\Users\[your name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\. Paste this directly into File Explorer’s address bar. The AppData folder is hidden by default — click View → Show → Hidden Items in File Explorer to see it. Also check the Temp folder: C:\Users\[your name]\AppData\Local\Temp\ for files starting with ~WRD or ~DF.
Step 2 — AutoSave and OneDrive Version History
If you use Office 365 (now called Microsoft 365) and your documents are saved to OneDrive or SharePoint, you have a safety net that most users are not aware of. Right-click the file in OneDrive and choose Version History to see every auto-saved version from the last 30 days (personal OneDrive) or longer (SharePoint/OneDrive for Business). You can restore an older version in one click. For Indian SME workers using Microsoft 365 subscriptions, this is the single most reliable way to recover a document that was accidentally overwritten or saved blank.
For Mac users with AutoSave on, Word also stores versions in /Users/[your name]/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Library/Preferences/AutoRecovery/. Open Finder, press Cmd+Shift+G, and paste that path to navigate there directly.
Step 3 — Deleted .docx files: Recuva
If the file was saved but then deleted (and is not in the Recycle Bin), download Recuva (free, by Piriform) on another computer and run it from a USB drive. Select “Documents” as the file type and the drive where the file lived as the scan location. Recuva searches for .docx, .doc, and .rtf files by signature even after the file system entry has been removed. Success rate drops with every write to the drive after deletion — the faster you run this, the better.
Step 4 — The India angle: power cuts and WFH SME workflow
In India, the most common Word document loss scenario is not a crash — it is a power cut that shuts the laptop mid-document before the user has pressed Ctrl+S. Office 365 with AutoSave enabled and OneDrive syncing is the complete solution to this: every keystroke is saved to the cloud in real time, so a power cut only loses the last few seconds of work. For users on one-time Office licenses (Office 2019/2021) without cloud sync, the UPS-plus-AutoRecover combination is the best available protection. Our general laptop service includes a backup and productivity check for customers who want their data safety workflow reviewed. Our post on recovering from a Windows update that wiped files covers related scenarios where the whole file system is affected.
Cost and when to call a professional
When DIY ends
Call a professional if: the drive the document was on has physically failed (clicking sounds, not detected); the AutoRecover folder is empty and the document was never saved to cloud; or the laptop crashed and will not boot, and the document existed only locally. In these cases the issue is a storage device recovery problem, not a file recovery problem.
Typical cost in India
For document recovery from a healthy drive: free with Recuva, or ₹500–₹1,000 at a service centre. For document recovery from a failed drive: see our data recovery service page for the full range. If the problem is a crashed Windows installation, our Windows update recovery guide covers that angle in detail.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
In fifteen-plus years of laptop repairs, the Word document panic is one of the most common calls we get — and one of the most often solved without any hardware work at all. Check AutoRecover first. It is there for exactly this situation. The ten minutes between saves is painful, but it is almost always enough to recover the substance of a lost document.
