Why does Realtek audio stop working after Windows 11 25H2?
Short answer: Windows 11's 25H2 feature update silently replaces third-party audio drivers with Microsoft's generic UAA (Universal Audio Architecture) HD driver during installation. The generic driver lacks the OEM codec configuration — the settings file that tells the Realtek chip how to route audio to your specific speakers, headphone jack, and microphone array. Without this, the audio chip is present but produces no output, and Windows shows "No audio output device installed" or a red X on the speaker icon.
How to fix Realtek audio after Windows 11 25H2
Step 1: Confirm the driver was replaced with a generic one
Open Device Manager (right-click Start, then Device Manager), expand Sound, video and game controllers. If you see "High Definition Audio Device" instead of "Realtek High Definition Audio" or "Realtek(R) Audio", the generic Microsoft driver has replaced your OEM driver. This is the cause in nearly all post-25H2 audio failures. If you still see a Realtek entry but with a yellow warning icon, a different issue is at play — right-click and check the error code under Properties for more detail.
Step 2: Reinstall the OEM Realtek audio driver
Go to your laptop manufacturer's support page — HP Support, Lenovo Support, Dell Support, Asus Support, or Acer Support — and search for your exact model number. Download the Realtek Audio or Realtek I2S Audio driver package listed under Audio drivers. Run the installer and restart. Do not download from Realtek's own website (realtek.com) — the generic Realtek package does not include the board-specific codec ini file that your laptop needs. Step 3: Restart the Windows Audio Service if audio is still missing
Sometimes the Windows Audio Service stops during the update process and does not restart. Press Win+R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Scroll to Windows Audio. If the Status column shows Stopped, right-click and select Start. Also check Windows Audio Endpoint Builder — restart it if stopped. If either service fails to start, run the built-in audio troubleshooter: Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Playing Audio → Run. The troubleshooter can automatically resolve service-level audio failures in one click.
Step 4: The India angle — Dolby Atmos and Nahimic conflicts
Many laptops sold in India through Flipkart and Amazon — particularly HP Envy/Spectre, Asus VivoBook, and Lenovo IdeaPad units — come pre-installed with audio enhancement software: Dolby Atmos Access, Bang & Olufsen Audio Control, or Nahimic Audio. These are separate applications that sit on top of the Realtek driver. After 25H2 replaces the Realtek driver, these enhancement apps sometimes fail to reinitialize and suppress the audio output even after you reinstall Realtek.
