Which is better for cleaning a laptop keyboard — razor blade or compressed air?
Short answer: Compressed air for routine monthly cleaning; razor blade only in professional hands for dried surface residue. They address different problems. Compressed air dislodges loose debris (dust, hair, crumbs) that has settled between keys. A razor blade scrapes dried, adhesive-bonded deposits off keycap surfaces and the keyboard deck — primarily tea/chai residue, dried food, and aged skin-oil build-up. Using the wrong tool for the wrong job either misses the problem or causes damage. Most Indian laptop keyboard cleaning situations require compressed air and a damp cloth — not a blade.

Tool 1: Compressed air — what it does and how to use it correctly
Compressed air (sold in ₹200–₹350 cans at stationery and electronics stores across India) ejects gas at pressure, dislodging loose debris from keyboard gaps. The correct technique: hold the laptop at roughly 75 degrees from horizontal — nearly vertical, keyboard facing forward. Hold the can upright at 15 cm distance. Spray in short left-to-right passes. Rotate the laptop 90 degrees and repeat. This allows gravity to carry dislodged debris downward and out of the keyboard rather than deeper into the mechanism. The common mistake is holding the laptop flat and the can inverted — the flat angle keeps debris inside, and the inverted can sprays liquid propellant (difluoroethane or HFC-134a) rather than gas. That propellant under the keys leaves a sticky residue and briefly condenses on the PCB traces, which can cause intermittent key contact faults. Tool 2: Razor blade — what it does and why it is not DIY
A single-edge razor blade (the flat, single-sided type used to scrape paint or labels from glass — available for under ₹50 at hardware shops) can scrape dried deposits off keycap surfaces and the keyboard deck. Technicians use it to remove compacted dried chai residue, hardened food, and aged skin oils that compressed air cannot dislodge because they are bonded to the surface. The blade is held at a shallow angle (5–10 degrees from horizontal) and drawn across the surface in a single direction — the goal is to shave the residue, not gouge the plastic. It is not used inside the key gap. The gap between a laptop keycap and the deck is typically 0.3–0.8 mm. A standard razor blade is 0.22 mm thick, so in theory it fits — but the slightest angle change levers the key upward and snaps the scissor clip underneath. Professional keyboard technicians have the tactile experience to feel the resistance difference between dried residue and a keycap seat. For most users, the safer approach is softening the residue first with 70% isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab, then wiping — no blade required.
Step 3: The complete keyboard cleaning routine for India
The approach that handles Indian conditions: once a month, compressed air at 75 degrees (described above). Once a month, follow with a lint-free microfibre cloth very lightly dampened with 70% isopropyl alcohol — one wipe per key, done section. For sticky chai or coffee residue on specific keys: a cotton swab dampened with 70% IPA, hold it against the side of the key for 10 seconds to soften the residue, then a single wipe. Never scrub with a wet swab repeatedly — the IPA can migrate under the keycap through the scissor gap. If the key remains sticky after this process, the residue has penetrated under the cap to the switch contact area — at that point, professional cleaning is the correct path.
Step 4: The India angle — chai, construction dust, and ceiling fans
Three Indian-specific factors create the keyboard debris mix that neither compressed air nor a blade alone can fully address. Chai and coffee residue forms a hygroscopic (moisture-attracting) crust on keys that worsens over months in humid seasons. The sugar content of chai means the residue is stickier than plain water spills — it binds dust to the key surface. Construction dust (silica particles from nearby building work) is abrasive and electrostatically charged, meaning it clings to plastic key surfaces rather than falling away with compressed air alone. Ceiling fans running overhead circulate fine particles that settle preferentially on horizontal surfaces — including open laptop keyboards.
