A RAM upgrade quote after the price rise: a bench scenario

LR LRW Engineer Team ~5 min read

Key takeaways

  • A typical bench scenario: a 27-year-old video editor in Pune expected a small RAM bill and got a larger quote. The reason is a rise in memory chip prices, not a mistake in the quote.
  • TrendForce, a firm that tracks chip prices, forecast a further rise of 10-15% in conventional DRAM contract prices for the fourth quarter, so prices are still going up, only more slowly than earlier this year.
  • Asus India's vice president said in April he expected laptop prices to rise by as much as 45% by the third quarter compared with December 2025. That is a forecast, not a price list.
  • Ask whether your laptop's memory is soldered before you accept any quote. Some laptops have soldered memory that cannot be upgraded at all.

This story is for editors, designers and students who rely on one laptop for heavy work and plan to add memory to it. It follows a typical case of a video editor in Pune who was surprised by a RAM quote. You will see how the bench checks a laptop first, what is known about the price rise, what the quote is made of, and what to ask so that you can decide calmly instead of feeling cheated.

Why was the RAM upgrade quote higher than the editor expected?

Short answer: Memory chips have become costlier across the industry, and a repair shop pays that higher price for the module it fits. TrendForce reports that conventional DRAM (the chips used for working memory) rose very sharply early this year and is still rising more slowly. Asus India and Indian retailers have also spoken of higher laptop prices. The quote is not a mistake.

A typical case from Pune

This is a typical scenario drawn from the kind of case a repair bench sees. It is not a record of one real customer. A video editor, 27, in Pune cuts short films and wedding edits on a laptop with 8 GB of RAM (the working memory a laptop uses while programs run). Playback stutters and the editing program closes without warning when two projects are open. A friend paid for a memory upgrade last year and told him it was a small bill. He sends us the model number by WhatsApp and asks for a quote.

The reply he gets is higher than his friend's figure. His first thought is that someone is taking advantage of him. It is a fair thought, and the right answer is to explain the quote line by line.

What the bench checks before quoting

1. Is the memory soldered or in slots?

Many thin laptops fix the memory to the board (soldered), and nothing can be added. Others have one or two slots. The editor's model number tells us which one he has. If you do not know, search the model number with the words 'service manual', or ask the seller. Do not buy a memory module before this is confirmed, because an opened module may not be returnable.

2. Which memory type fits?

DDR4 and DDR5 are different generations and do not fit each other's slots. Our DDR4 vs DDR5 guide explains this in plain words.

3. Is memory really the problem?

Editing programs also slow down when the drive is nearly full or when the laptop runs hot and slows itself down to cool off. The bench looks at memory use, drive space and temperature while a project plays. Sometimes the real fix is cheaper than RAM.

What is known about the price rise

Who said itWhat was saidKind of statement
TrendForceConventional DRAM contract prices to rise 10-15% from one quarter to the next in the fourth quarter of 2026; NAND (the chips in SSDs) up 15-20%Forecast, released 30 September 2026
Asus IndiaLaptop prices could rise by as much as 45% by the third quarter, compared with December 2025; stabilising by the end of the fourth quarterForecast by its vice president, April 2026
Business TodayLaptop prices up 15-30%; hikes seen at Dell, HP and Lenovo, reported but not formally announcedReport, 1 June 2026

The Asus 45% is a forecast over several quarters, not one increase, so please do not read it as what any single laptop or module costs today. TrendForce explains its latest outlook on its quarterly price forecast page.

What was inside the editor's quote

  • The memory module. The biggest part, and the one that has risen in price.
  • The size and speed. A larger module costs more. A 16 GB module can be a sensible step for editing, but your work decides that.
  • Labour and testing. Opening the laptop, fitting the module and running a memory test.

We do not quote a rupee figure in this post. The exact quote comes after we check the laptop and is shared for your approval before any work begins.

Quote validity, courier time and power dips

Memory prices can move between the day you ask and the day you decide, so ask how long a quote stays valid. If you live far from a service centre, courier time adds days, and a video editor with a deadline may prefer to fit the module once and test it properly. Dust and warm rooms also push laptops to slow down, so clean vents help before any upgrade. Use a surge-protected socket during the work, because a power dip while a laptop is open on the bench is the last thing anyone wants.

When to get help

  • You do not know whether your laptop's memory is soldered.
  • The laptop restarts or shows a blue screen after you added a module yourself.
  • The laptop does not start after the case was opened.
  • You were quoted a price with no breakdown of module, size and labour.

Our laptop memory upgrade page shows what we check first. In Hyderabad we visit you at home, and the charge is ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us. We also accept laptops by courier from anywhere in India.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team

Ask for the quote in writing with three lines: the module type and size, the labour, and the warranty. Then ask what happens if the laptop turns out to have soldered memory. A shop that answers that last question clearly is one you can trust with your project files. Copy your current projects to a drive before any work starts.
