Why preparation matters before a laptop repair
Short answer: Eight quick steps before your booking will speed up diagnosis, protect your data, and ensure you get an accurate cost estimate before any work starts. Skipping even one or two of these — especially the backup and the symptom description — is the most common cause of delays in Indian doorstep-pickup repair workflows, where the engineer visits once, takes the laptop, and returns it repaired. The more you communicate upfront, the faster the turnaround.
The 8-step pre-repair checklist
Step 1: Back up your data
This is the only non-negotiable step. Back up Documents, Desktop, Downloads, Pictures, and Videos before you hand over the laptop — even for a routine screen or keyboard replacement. Use Google Drive (free up to 15 GB), an external SSD, or Windows Backup / macOS Time Machine. Our full backup guide covers all four methods with India-specific pricing. If the laptop is not booting, call first — we can extract data before beginning the repair.
Step 2: Note your symptoms precisely
Write down or voice-record: when the problem started, what you were doing at the time, whether it is constant or intermittent (i.e., happens every time or only sometimes), any error messages or codes, and whether a recent event preceded it — a fall, a spill, a power cut, or a software update. The more specific you are, the faster the diagnosis. “The screen flickers when the lid is moved below 90 degrees” is 10x more useful than “the screen has a problem.”
Step 3: Take a short video of the issue
A 20–30 second video on your phone showing the problem — the flickering screen, the crackling speaker, the error message — saves the technician significant diagnostic time. Send it over WhatsApp when you book. Intermittent problems are especially hard to reproduce on demand; a video is the most reliable record of what the customer actually experienced.
Step 4: Charge the laptop to 40–60%
A completely flat battery can prevent some diagnostic tools from running. On Apple MacBooks, Apple Diagnostics (the built-in hardware test) requires a minimum charge level. On Windows laptops, some BIOS-level (firmware) tests will refuse to run on battery alone. Aim for 40–60% charge before the appointment — the engineer will use AC power for the repair itself.
When to call a repair service (and what it costs)
When DIY ends
The remaining four steps complete the checklist: (5) remove any USB drives, SD cards, external mice, and non-essential peripherals before handover. (6) Check your laptop’s warranty status — search the serial number on the manufacturer’s website. An out-of-warranty result means you are free to use any independent repair service. (7) Get a written estimate before work starts — ask for the quote over WhatsApp so you have a record. (8) Confirm the pickup time and expected return window so you can plan your day accordingly. Following the full checklist with our Hyderabad doorstep repair service typically reduces total repair time by one to two days compared to ad-hoc drop-offs.
Typical cost in India
The visit itself costs ₹149. That covers the doorstep diagnostic and a verbal + WhatsApp cost estimate. You decide whether to proceed before any repair work starts. See our repair-vs-replace guide if you are weighing whether the repair is worth it at all. The HP service center Banjara Hills page has brand-specific pricing for HP repairs if that is your laptop’s make.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
The single biggest time-saver in any doorstep workflow is the symptom video. Engineers who arrive with a 20-second clip of the problem can often skip two or three diagnostic steps entirely and give a precise quote on the spot. It takes under a minute to record. We ask every customer to send one before we arrive — it genuinely cuts repair time and back-and-forth in half.
