Not all 100W power banks are safe for laptops
Short answer: A laptop power bank must be USB PD 3.0 or 3.1 certified, BIS-marked, and carry a genuine Wh rating on the label. Dozens of products sold in India list "100W" on the packaging but deliver far less, lack proper voltage negotiation, or use uncertified cells that pose a fire risk. We see battery damage from cheap power banks on the bench — swollen cells, degraded BMS (Battery Management System — the circuit that protects the battery), and shortened battery life within months of use.
How to choose a safe 100W laptop power bank in India
Step 1: Verify certification — BIS and USB-IF
In India, lithium-ion power banks above 10,000 mAh must carry BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification — look for the ISI mark with a certification number on the label. USB PD 3.0 (which delivers up to 100 W) or USB PD 3.1 EPR (up to 240 W) certification from USB-IF (USB Implementers Forum) is the international standard that governs safe voltage negotiation between the power bank and your laptop's battery controller. Brands like Anker (PowerIQ 4.0), Baseus (GaN series), and Realme (TechLife series) carry both in their Indian market versions. Always buy the Indian-market variant, not a grey-import — import variants may not carry BIS certification and could be held at customs.
Step 2: Understand real capacity vs rated capacity
A power bank rated at 26,800 mAh does not deliver 26,800 mAh to your laptop. There is always a conversion loss (typically 10–15%) when the bank's internal 3.7 V cells step up to 20 V for USB-C PD delivery. The Wh (watt-hour) figure is the honest number — a 99 Wh bank at any mAh rating delivers ~99 Wh to connected devices minus losses. Most 15.6” Windows laptops have batteries between 45 Wh and 72 Wh. A 99 Wh bank gives you about one to one-and-a-half full charges. Never trust a power bank that does not print the Wh rating on the label — that is a major red flag.
Step 3: The India angle — heat, airline rules, and rainy-season care
Indian summers push power bank temperatures above safe operating range if left in a car or bag in direct sunlight. A bank at 50°C+ ambient begins to thermally stress its cells even without any load. Store power banks in shade and never charge them in direct sunlight or inside a hot car. Airlines in India follow DGCA/IATA rules: batteries up to 100 Wh in cabin carry-on, no check-in. Between 100–160 Wh, you need airline approval at check-in. This is a hard rule — a 30,000 mAh bank at 3.7V is roughly 111 Wh, which requires approval. During monsoon, keep power banks in a dry pouch — water ingress in a lithium pack can cause a short circuit.
Step 4: Charging your laptop — does USB-C PD actually work?
Most laptops released after 2021 charge fully over USB-C PD at 65–100 W. However, some models — particularly certain HP Pavilion and Dell Inspiron budget lines — still use proprietary barrel connectors as the primary charging path, with USB-C limited to 45 W or less for compatibility charging only. Check your laptop's spec sheet for "USB-C charging wattage." If USB-C tops at 45 W, a 100 W power bank still works — it just throttles down. If your laptop battery swells (bottom panel bows outward), if the battery charges to 100% then drops rapidly to 30%, or if Windows/macOS reports battery health below 70%, the cells may be degraded. A swollen battery is a safety hazard — stop use immediately.
