Why fine colour powder is harder to clean than it looks
Short answer: Festival colour powder is milled to under 50 microns so it hangs in the air and coats surfaces evenly. That same fineness means it passes between keycaps and enters the scissor-switch mechanism (the small plastic X-frame that gives each key its travel) with ease. Dry powder inside the mechanism causes keys to feel gritty, skip inputs, or register twice. Wet colour — mixed with water for water-play — carries a dye that stains the thin membrane sheet under the keyboard and corrodes key contacts when it dries. If your laptop was anywhere near colour play this spring, the safest move is to give it a proper check before problems show up.
How to clean your laptop after Holi
Step 1: Assess the situation — dry or wet colour?
The approach differs entirely depending on what reached the laptop. Dry powder on the external surface (keyboard top, lid, palmrest) is a surface clean problem — relatively straightforward. Wet colour anywhere near the keyboard, ports, or vents changes the situation entirely. If wet colour made direct contact with the laptop, treat it as a liquid spill: power off immediately by holding the power button, do not plug in the charger, do not attempt to power back on to "check if it's okay," and bring it to a technician within 24 hours for ultrasonic cleaning. Powering a wet machine on is the single most common way customers turn a ₹800 keyboard cleaning job into a ₹6,000 motherboard repair.
Step 2: Dry powder on keyboard — the correct sequence
Turn the laptop upside down and gently tap the base — this dislodges loose powder that has not yet settled between the keys. Then use a soft-bristle paintbrush (a clean ½-inch artist's brush works well) to sweep powder away from between the keycaps, brushing outward toward the edges of the keyboard. Follow with short bursts from a ₹120–₹200 compressed-air can, holding the nozzle at a 45-degree angle — never straight down into the key gaps, which drives powder deeper. Do not use a household vacuum cleaner on a laptop keyboard; the static discharge risk is real and the gap geometry often causes plastic clips to crack under suction.
Step 3: Display, lid, and palmrest wipe
Colour on the display surface is common and mostly harmless if addressed promptly. Use a dry microfibre cloth first to pick up surface powder without spreading it. If a faint stain remains, barely dampen the cloth with plain water (not isopropyl alcohol on OLED panels, which can affect the anti-glare coating on some models). Wipe with light circular strokes. For the aluminium or plastic palmrest, a slightly damp microfibre cloth is safe on most surfaces. Avoid coloured cleaning cloths — they can transfer dye onto light-coloured laptop finishes.
Step 4: The India angle — festival timing and keyboard longevity
Holi falls in late February or early March, which in most of India is a period of rising heat and humidity. Any moisture that carries Holi colour into the keyboard sits in a warm, slightly humid environment — ideal for colour pigments to bond to plastic surfaces. We recommend cleaning within 6 hours of exposure rather than leaving it overnight. The dye in many commercial Holi colours is formulated to bind to surfaces quickly (that is what makes it visible on skin and fabric), and the same chemistry applies inside a keyboard mechanism. Cleaning promptly prevents permanent staining of keycap undersides. Also check our keyboard cleaning step-by-step guide for routine upkeep beyond festival seasons.
When to call a professional (and what it costs in India)
When DIY ends
Stop and call a technician if: keys remain sticky after surface brushing and compressed air; any key produces a double-press or no-press consistently; wet colour reached the keyboard or ports; or you can see visible colour staining under keycaps when you look at the key gaps at an angle.
Typical India repair cost
A keyboard cleaning service without replacement runs ₹400–₹800. If the dye has stained the key membrane or shorted key contacts, a full keyboard replacement runs ₹1,200–₹4,500 depending on brand, model, and backlight type. A liquid-damage ultrasonic board clean, if wet colour reached the motherboard, runs ₹1,500–₹4,000. See our laptop keyboard repair page for brand-specific options.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
The most expensive Holi repair we see is not the keyboard — it is the motherboard that was powered on while still wet with colour-water. Fifteen minutes of patience (power off, let it dry a little, then bring it in) saves the customer ₹4,000–₹8,000 compared to the ones who see the laptop start normally and leave it running. When in doubt, leave it off.
If the idea of a quarterly care routine feels like one more thing to track in an already busy month, our Annual Maintenance Contract handles it for you — ₹2,999/year for any Windows laptop, ₹3,499/year for MacBook, with unlimited free servicing and free pickup-and-drop across Hyderabad.
