When does PCIe Gen 5 NVMe RAID 0 actually deliver in India?

Short answer: PCIe Gen 5 NVMe RAID 0 (two PCIe 5.0 SSDs striped together for combined sequential throughput of 25,000–28,000 MB/s) delivers real-world gains in a specific class of workloads — those that genuinely saturate even Gen 4 NVMe throughput (7,000 MB/s). These are: 8K RAW video editing, large 3D asset library loading for scenes above 50 GB, and local large language model (LLM — a type of AI model, such as a 70B-parameter model run locally) inference. For everything else — including 4K H.265 video editing, gaming, and general desktop use — a single Gen 4 or Gen 5 NVMe is indistinguishable from Gen 5 RAID 0 in actual workflow.

Real-world workloads that saturate Gen 4 NVMe

The benchmark numbers for Gen 5 RAID 0 are impressive — 25,000–28,000 MB/s sequential read in CrystalDiskMark (a common storage benchmark tool). But benchmarks measure peak throughput with large block sequential reads, which is not representative of most storage workloads. The tasks that actually saturate Gen 4's 7,000 MB/s ceiling are: (1) 8K RAW codec editing (BRAW, ARRI RAW, or Cinema DNG at 8K) where a single stream requires 2,000–5,000 MB/s and multiple streams multiply this; (2) Unreal Engine 5 or Blender scene loading where 50+ GB of assets load from disk simultaneously; (3) loading a 70B-parameter LLM (a large AI model, like a locally run open-source language model) from NVMe into RAM — this transfers 40–140 GB in one shot. Mandatory for Indian Gen 5 RAID 0 builds: a thick aluminium M.2 heatsink on each drive (many X870E and Z890 boards ship with these) and strong case airflow directed at the M.2 zone of the motherboard.

Cost and platform requirements in India

PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSDs in India are priced significantly above Gen 4. A 2TB Gen 5 NVMe (WD Black SN850X Gen5, Seagate FireCuda 540, Samsung 990 Pro 5.0) costs approximately ₹18,000–25,000 — versus ₹10,000–14,000 for the equivalent Gen 4 drive. Gen 5 RAID 0 with two 2TB drives = ₹36,000–50,000 just for storage. Platform requirements are strict: both M.2 slots must be CPU-direct PCIe 5.0 — only X870E (AMD AM5), Z890 (Intel LGA1851), and select Z790 boards with two Gen 5 slots qualify. Most B-series boards offer only one Gen 5 M.2 slot, making RAID 0 across Gen 5 impossible. A single 2TB Gen 5 NVMe at ₹18,000–25,000 on a supported board is often the better investment — same sequential speed as Gen 4 RAID 0, no complexity.

The India angle — power cuts and RAID risk

India's power grid makes RAID 0 arrays specifically vulnerable. Gen 5 NVMe drives have sophisticated power loss protection (PLP — small capacitors that complete in-flight writes if power is interrupted), but RAID 0 stripes across two drives means a power cut can leave one drive at a write checkpoint that the other is not.
