Does NVMe RAID 0 actually improve video editing speed in India?
Short answer: For 4K ProRes or H.265 workflows, a single Gen 5 NVMe SSD already exceeds the storage bandwidth required — RAID 0 adds no practical benefit and doubles your data loss risk. For 6K and 8K RAW cinema footage from cameras like the Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro or RED Komodo, RAID 0's doubled throughput becomes genuinely useful. The use case is narrow; for most Indian video editors, it is unnecessary complexity.
Understanding RAID 0 for video workflows
Step 1: What RAID 0 actually does
RAID 0 (Redundant Array of Independent Disks level 0 — despite the name, there is no redundancy) splits data evenly across two drives in chunks called stripes. When the system reads a large file, it reads from both drives simultaneously, effectively doubling the throughput. Two Gen 4 NVMe drives (each rated at approximately 7 GB/s) in RAID 0 achieve approximately 13–14 GB/s sequential read — well above the 3–4 GB/s that 4K ProRes RAW actually requires, and approaching the 10+ GB/s that 8K RAW workflows demand.
The trade-off: if either drive fails, the entire array is lost. With a single drive, a failure loses that drive's data. With RAID 0, a failure on either drive makes both drives' data unreadable — the probability of data loss roughly doubles.
Step 2: When RAID 0 is genuinely useful
The workflows that benefit measurably from RAID 0 in video editing are: uncompressed 8K RAW footage from cinema cameras (requires 8–12 GB/s sustained read), multi-stream 6K ProRes playback in DaVinci Resolve with simultaneous colour grading nodes, and AI-accelerated denoise or upscale processes that stream large frame buffers. These are professional cinema and high-end broadcast workflows — not typical YouTube or corporate video production. For Indian studio setups where these workflows are standard, RAID 0 on a dedicated scratch drive (not the OS drive) is a reasonable configuration, provided a backup exists at all times.
Step 3: The Gen 5 NVMe alternative
PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSDs — available in India from brands like Samsung 990 Pro Gen 5 and WD Black SN850X Gen 5 equivalents — deliver approximately 12–14 GB/s sequential read from a single drive. At roughly ₹15,000–₹25,000 for a 2 TB Gen 5 NVMe, this is a simpler and safer path to the same throughput as RAID 0 using two Gen 4 drives. One drive means one failure mode, straightforward backup, and no RAID controller complexity.

Step 4: India-specific risks — power cuts and data integrity
India's frequent power cuts introduce a specific data integrity risk for NVMe RAID arrays. When power cuts happen mid-write, the RAID controller may not have written the full stripe to both drives. On restoration, the array can enter a degraded state that requires manual intervention. Without an online UPS protecting the desktop, a RAID 0 array is at elevated risk of corruption after every power cut. Recommended configuration for most Indian editors
OS + applications on a 1 TB Gen 5 NVMe. Active project storage on a 2–4 TB Gen 4 NVMe (fast enough for all 4K and most 6K workflows). Completed projects archived to a 4+ TB external HDD or NAS. This eliminates RAID complexity while providing the performance required for most Indian video production work.
When to consider RAID 0
Only when your primary footage is 8K RAW cinema files and you have confirmed that a single Gen 5 NVMe is a measurable bottleneck — verifiable by benchmarking actual playback latency, not by sequential speed numbers alone. And only with a simultaneous backup on a second storage pool — never RAID 0 as your only project copy.
