You upgraded macOS to Sequoia 15.x and now MATLAB R2026a opens to License Manager Error -5. MATLAB worked fine before the update. The licensing daemon cannot find a valid license, and the error message is unhelpfully generic. The cause is an M-series Mac FNP host ID mismatch — fixable in 10 minutes without contacting MathWorks support.
Why MATLAB shows License Manager Error -5 on M-series Macs after Sequoia updates
MATLAB uses FlexNet Publisher (FNP — a widely used software licensing library that binds licenses to specific hardware identifiers) to validate licenses. On macOS, FNP uses the MAC address of the primary network interface (en0) as the host ID. When macOS Sequoia 15.x updates how it reports network interface identifiers, the MAC address FNP reads may differ from the one in your license file — even though the hardware is identical. FNP reads the new value, finds a mismatch, and returns Error -5.
Fix: regenerate host ID and update the license file
Step 1: Find the correct host ID
Open Terminal (Applications → Utilities → Terminal). Run:
/usr/sbin/networksetup -getmacaddress en0
Output: Ethernet Address: a4:c3:f0:45:12:9b. Copy without colons: a4c3f045129b. This is your host ID. Also try en1 if en0 returns nothing.
Step 2: Update license on MathWorks website
Log in to mathworks.com → License Management → your license → Manage Users. Under Install Products, find your M-series Mac entry. Click Update Host ID, enter the new MAC address without colons, save, and download the updated license.lic file.
Step 3: Replace the license file
In Finder, press Cmd+Shift+G and type: /Applications/MATLAB_R2026a.app/licenses/. Replace the existing license.lic with the downloaded file. Create the folder if it does not exist.
Step 4: Restart the FNP daemon
In Terminal:
/Applications/MATLAB_R2026a.app/bin/maci64/lmutil lmdown -q
/Applications/MATLAB_R2026a.app/bin/maci64/lmgrd -c /Applications/MATLAB_R2026a.app/licenses/license.lic
Launch MATLAB — it should start without Error -5.
Network license server case (universities and institutions in India)
If your MATLAB license is a campus network license — common at IITs, NITs, and engineering colleges — Error -5 means the license server IP or hostname changed and your client does not know. The license.lic on your Mac contains a line like SERVER matlab-license.iit.ac.in HOSTNAME 1717. If the server IP changed, update this line. Contact your institution IT help desk for the new server address. Many Indian engineering institutions run MATLAB license servers on aging Windows Server machines updated during semester breaks. The Error -5 surge at semester start almost always traces to a server IP change during the break.
India context: RAM constraints on M-series MacBooks for MATLAB
MATLAB R2026a on an M4 MacBook Pro with 16 GB RAM runs significantly faster than on a 2020 Intel MacBook Pro for most engineering computations. A finite element analysis or large signal processing computation can use 12–14 GB of RAM. On M-series Macs, RAM is soldered and not user-upgradable — choose the RAM configuration at purchase time. For Intel MacBook Pros with expansion slots, our RAM upgrade service can increase RAM for MATLAB-heavy workflows.
