This is a typical scenario drawn from the kind of case a repair bench sees. A paediatric nurse in Madhapur, forty-one, notices that her MacBook no longer sits flat on the table. The trackpad clicks with a strange feel, and one corner of the case seems to bulge slightly. She uses it between shifts for notes and reports. Here is how a technician handles such a case, and what you should do the day you see the same sign.
Why does a MacBook trackpad lift when the battery swells?
Short answer: the battery sits directly beneath and beside the trackpad. If a cell swells, it pushes the trackpad and the case upward, so the trackpad lifts, rattles or clicks unevenly. The trackpad is often the symptom, not the cause. A swollen battery needs to be replaced, and until then the MacBook should be switched off and kept unplugged.
The typical case: what the owner notices
- The MacBook rocks slightly on a flat table.
- The trackpad feels stiff, uneven, or clicks with a different sound.
- A gap appears between the trackpad and the case, or the bottom cover bulges.
- The lid does not close completely flat.
Any one of these is enough reason to stop using the laptop on charge and bring it in.
Step 1 at the bench: look before touching
The technician first switches the MacBook off and disconnects any charger. The case is checked from the side for a bulge, and the trackpad is tested by pressing gently at the corners only. Nobody should press hard on the bulge. A swollen lithium battery can be damaged by pressure, and the bench treats it with the same care as any damaged battery.
Step 2: open the case and inspect the battery
After the bottom cover is removed, the battery connector is disconnected first. Then the battery cells are checked for swelling, marks on the wrapping and signs of liquid or heat. The trackpad, its flat cable and the case are inspected for dents or bent metal caused by the pressure. If the trackpad has been bent, it may need replacement as well, but that is decided only after the battery is out.
Step 3: remove the old pack and fit the new one
Many MacBook battery packs are held in place with adhesive strips or glue, so removal needs patience and the correct tools. Pulling hard or prying with metal can puncture a cell, which is why this job is not recommended at home. The old pack is placed in a safe container for proper disposal. The area is cleaned, the new pack is fitted and connected, and the trackpad is refitted flat. Our MacBook battery replacement page describes the full process, and our trackpad replacement cost guide explains when the trackpad itself needs work.
Step 4: test before the MacBook goes back
- Click at all four corners and the middle of the trackpad, and check that the click feels even.
- Run two-finger scroll, pinch and swipe gestures.
- Check that the MacBook sits flat on the table with the lid closed.
- Charge it and confirm that the battery is recognised and charges normally.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
The day you see the lift, shut the MacBook down, unplug the charger and move it to a hard surface such as a table or tiled floor. Do not charge it again, even for a few minutes to copy files. Photograph the bulge and message us the picture; we will advise the safest next step.
