A flooded Mumbai flat, a couriered MacBook, and a tight deadline
Short answer: A 13-inch MacBook Pro M4 submerged in 30 cm of monsoon flood water in a Mumbai ground-floor flat arrived at the bench three days after the incident. The owner had the presence of mind to not power it on. The MacBook was completely unresponsive on arrival. After a full ultrasonic board clean, corrosion mapping, and a 48-hour dry cycle, the device powered on and returned with full data intact. Total cost: ₹14,500. The story has lessons for anyone with flood-exposed Apple silicon hardware.
What the bench revealed
Intake condition and first inspection
The MacBook arrived in a sealed bag with a note: “was in 30 cm water for 6 hours, left flat after flood, brought to dry storage, have not plugged in.” That last detail mattered enormously. Under magnification, the logic board showed a visible mineral tide-line on the MagSafe power rail area and around the USB-C controller IC. The flood water had carried dissolved sediment — Mumbai monsoon runoff mixed with ground-floor building drain backflow. The sediment line was the most aggressive corrosion risk. The good news: no oxidation was visible on the SoC package (Apple’s System on a Chip, the large chip that contains the M4 processor, RAM, and GPU all in one block). The SoC’s dense packaging actually resists water ingress between chips because there are no gaps to wick into.
Ultrasonic cleaning and corrosion map
The board went into the ultrasonic cleaner (a tank that uses high-frequency sound waves in isopropyl alcohol solution to dislodge microscopic contaminants from solder joints and IC pads) for two 15-minute cycles. Under post-clean magnification, a corrosion cluster appeared on three capacitors on the USB-C power delivery path. These were the components most exposed to the flood-water mineral residue. The capacitors — small passive components that smooth voltage fluctuations in the charging circuit — measured out of specification. Three were replaced via micro-soldering. Power-on and data verification
After a 48-hour desiccant dry cycle, the MacBook powered on to the login screen. The 100% data intact outcome was confirmed by the owner accessing their project files remotely via iCloud before the device even shipped back. Battery health was at 91% of rated capacity — the cells had not been compromised during the flood exposure. The MagSafe charging port required a replacement cable assembly at ₹3,200 as the connector pins had oxidised beyond reliable contact.
The monsoon flood MacBook checklist
If your MacBook or any laptop is exposed to flood water: power off immediately and do not attempt to restart it regardless of whether it appears to be working. The goal is to get the board into an ultrasonic clean before the mineral residue dries into a conductive crust. Book a service immediately if the device was submerged or soaked in any flood water, regardless of whether it appears to power on normally. Also if you notice the MagSafe LED not lighting, the laptop charging erratically, or unusual battery behaviour in the weeks after a flooding event.

The single biggest factor in flood recovery outcomes is the “powered off during exposure” variable. MacBooks that were asleep or shut down during the flood and were not powered on afterward have a significantly higher recovery rate than devices the owner tried to restart out of panic. The M4’s unified memory architecture is genuinely more resilient than older multi-chip designs — but it cannot survive an electrical short caused by wet-board power-on.
