If you are an architect in Ameerpet, 45 (a typical scenario, not a real job), with years of drawings on a MacBook that has stopped starting, the question is not only how to repair it. It is what happens to the storage inside it. Apple offers mail-in and pick-up, and an independent repair is another option. This post explains why the storage of a modern Mac is different, what Apple advises, and what you can do before any repair so that your files are not left to chance.
Why does the storage inside a MacBook matter in a repair?
Your MacBook needs a repair that may involve the main board, and your files live on its storage.
Short answer: make a backup before any repair, whichever route you choose. On Apple silicon Macs the storage is built into the main board, so a board repair can put your data at risk, and a repair never replaces the backup step. If the Mac will not start, ask about data recovery before repair work begins, because some repairs change what can be recovered.
On older Macs, the storage was a separate drive that could often be taken out and read on its own. On Apple silicon models, the storage is part of the logic board (the main circuit board), which also holds the processor. That is why the board and your data are tied together. If the board is replaced, your storage can go with it.
What does Apple say, and what routes does it list?
Apple's India page for Mac laptops lists personal support at a Genius Bar or an Apple Authorised Service Provider, a mail-in service with a pre-paid postage box, and a home or office pick-up, with the Mac returned when service is complete. Availability of each route in India is not itemised on the page, so check Apple's page for what applies in your city.
On data, Apple's support guidance says a backup is important in case the startup disk needs to be erased or replaced during service. It also advises that, if you are concerned about the security of your data during service, you turn on FileVault (Apple's built-in disk encryption) or remove your data, for example by erasing all content and settings. You can read the advice on Apple's page about preparing your Mac for service.
What can a local independent repair offer?
Laptop Repair World records the condition, serial number and accessories when your MacBook is collected, and we can advise you on taking a backup first. Our written quotation lists parts, labour, GST and the visit fee before any work, each part is named as original, compatible or refurbished with its own warranty, and a revised quotation is approved before any further paid work if testing finds another fault. See our MacBook logic board repair page and our Apple data recovery page. No route can promise that your data survives a board repair or can be recovered from a Mac that will not start; the outcome depends on the fault.
What should you do before any MacBook repair?
- Back up. Use Time Machine (the backup tool built into macOS) on an external drive, or copy your folders. Open a few files from the copy to check it works.
- Turn on FileVault if you want, or erase. Apple lists both as options. Erasing is only safe if your backup is complete. The menu path can differ by macOS version, so follow Apple's current steps.
- Sign out of your Apple account. Keep your account password handy.
- Write down the serial number and photograph the Mac, including scratches and dents.
- Keep the charger and cable unless the repairer asks for them.
If you erase the Mac before a backup, the data may be gone for good. If the Mac still starts, back up before you do anything else. Our guide to backing up before sending for repair shows the steps in plain language.
What if the MacBook will not start?
Then a normal backup may be impossible. Ask for data recovery to be discussed first, and have the repair plan explained in writing. Our post on Apple M5 MacBook SSD recovery explains why recovery from a Mac with built-in storage depends on the fault and may not be possible. Ask that the board is not replaced and macOS is not reinstalled until your data question has been answered.
How do the two routes compare for your storage?
Why does courier distance and humidity matter for a MacBook in India?
A Mac travelling by courier faces days of handling and, in the monsoon, humid air. Moisture inside a board can cause corrosion, which can lead to a board repair. If you live far from a service centre, the extra days in transit are one more reason to have your backup done and verified before it leaves your hands.
When is Apple the better route?
If your Mac is in warranty, or you hold AppleCare+, start with Apple and check your coverage on Apple's coverage page using your serial number. An independent repair suits a Mac out of cover when you want a local assessment, a written record at hand-over, or a conversation about your data before work starts.
When to get help
- The MacBook will not start, and you have no backup.
- A liquid spill or drop was followed by a black screen.
- You were told the board needs replacing and you are unsure about your files.
- You want a written record of the condition when you hand it over.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Before any MacBook leaves your hands, make a backup and open two files from it. That one check takes minutes and tells you the copy is real. After that, choose the repair route on cost, convenience and coverage, knowing your files do not depend on it.
