Your MacBook needs repair, and you are about to hand it over. Everything is on it: photos, college work, accounts, perhaps client files. Should you leave FileVault switched on, or erase the Mac first? This post explains both choices in plain words, what Apple itself advises, and how an independent repairer such as Laptop Repair World handles the handover. By the end you will know which choice suits your fault and what to do before the laptop leaves your hands.
Should you leave FileVault on or erase the Mac first?
Short answer: Back up first, always. Then choose by the fault. If the Mac starts and the problem needs your account to be seen, leave FileVault on and share the password only if you must. If the fault does not need your account, such as a loose hinge or a speaker fault, erasing is a fair choice. Apple offers both as options.
What does Apple advise before service?
Apple's support page on Mac service says having a backup is important in case it becomes necessary to erase or replace the computer's startup disk during service. It then says that if you are concerned about the security of your data, you can either turn on FileVault or remove your data, such as by erasing all content and settings. You can read this on Apple's support page.
FileVault is the Mac's built-in disk encryption. With it on, the contents of the startup disk are scrambled and stay unreadable without your login password or recovery key. Erasing all content and settings goes further: it removes your files and accounts so the Mac is back to a fresh state. The menu path and wording differ by Mac model and macOS version, so check Apple's page for yours.
A backup is not optional. As Apple notes, the startup disk may have to be erased or replaced during service. Without a backup, that data may not come back.
Which choice suits which fault?
How do you back up and prepare the Mac?
- Back up with Time Machine or by copying your folders to an external drive or cloud storage. Open a few files from the backup to confirm they work. Our guide to backing up before repair shows the steps.
- Note your passwords. Keep your Apple Account password and any FileVault recovery key safe. If you forget them, our note on FileVault recovery options explains what is possible.
- Decide: leave FileVault on, or erase if the Mac starts and the fault allows it.
- Ask about account locks. Ask the repairer whether any lock, such as Find My, must be switched off first. The menu and wording can differ by model.
Never hand over a laptop with the only copy of important files on it. Erased data on a Mac may not be recoverable.
How does Laptop Repair World handle a MacBook handover?
Laptop Repair World was founded in 2007 and has one store at MG Road, Secunderabad. We offer doorstep service across Hyderabad and accept laptops by courier from anywhere in India. When we collect a MacBook, we record its condition, serial number and accessories, and we ask you to confirm your backup status. A written quotation listing parts, labour, GST and the visit fee comes before any work. If testing finds another fault, we get a revised quotation approved before further paid work.
After the repair we show you the repaired function at a handover test, with a short written record of the work. We follow up by call or message after the laptop is returned. Repairs carry a 30-day repair warranty, subject to its terms, and No Fix No Fee means no repair charge if the fault is not fixed. If you want to compare with the brand's route, our page on Apple service centre versus independent repair sets out the questions to ask both sides.
What changes when you send the Mac by courier?
Distance adds a risk that has nothing to do with software. A MacBook sent from a smaller town spends days in transit, so pack it well, remove loose accessories and note its condition with photos. Monsoon humidity can also affect a package, so wrap the laptop in a plastic sleeve inside the box. Since the Mac will be out of your hands for longer, a verified backup and a strong password matter even more. Hyderabad readers can use MacBook doorstep service in Hyderabad and avoid transit altogether.
When does Apple's own route make more sense?
If your MacBook is within warranty or covered by AppleCare+, start with Apple, because the coverage is the reason to. Check coverage with the serial number on Apple's coverage page, and read Apple's terms for how it handles your data. Choose an independent repair when coverage has ended, or when you want a written quote and a handover record before you approve anything.
When to get help
- The Mac will not start, and you have no backup.
- You forgot your login password or FileVault recovery key.
- The disk shows errors, or files have gone missing.
- You need to hand the Mac over and are unsure what to do first.
For lost files, see our MacBook data recovery page. For a doorstep visit, there is a ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us. We are open Monday to Saturday, 10 AM to 8 PM, on WhatsApp and phone at 7702503336.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Think of the backup as the part you do for yourself, whatever you decide about FileVault. Do it a day early, open three or four files from it, and only then hand the Mac over. If a repairer does not ask about your backup, ask them why.
