Every morning, the Mac Studio refused to wake up
Short answer: A VFX studio’s Mac Studio M2 Ultra developed a pattern of refusing to cold-boot for three weeks. Every morning the power button produced no response — no fan spin, no boot chime, no display signal. Only after plugging and unplugging the power cable twice and waiting 15 minutes would it boot normally. Once running, it was completely stable and handled multi-track DaVinci Resolve projects without issue. On the bench: a failed NVRAM capacitor cluster (the group of small capacitors that maintain non-volatile memory state between power cycles) was found leaking charge overnight. Repair: ₹14,500. The Mac Studio has been booting reliably since.
The diagnosis path
Initial assessment — ruling out software
The first suspicion in any cold-boot intermittent failure is a boot-device issue: the internal SSD controller failing to respond fast enough during the power-on sequence. We ran an Apple Configurator 2 diagnostic over USB-C while the machine was in the failed-cold-boot state. The SSD was visible and passed all health checks. The SSD was intact — the fault was on the power management side of the boot sequence, not the storage side. This ruled out a storage failure and pointed to the NVRAM or EC power-rail.
NVRAM capacitor failure under cold conditions
Under magnification, four capacitors in the NVRAM supply cluster showed a faint electrolyte seepage trace at their base pads. These are small tantalum capacitors (a type that uses tantalum metal oxide as the dielectric material — known for high capacitance in small packages but vulnerable to electrolytic leakage when exposed to voltage spikes). The studio environment had experienced two power outages in the preceding month, and the Mac Studio was on a shared UPS that was undersized for the audio interface and display load. Voltage transients during recovery from the outages had likely stressed the capacitors beyond their rating. Capacitor replacement via micro-soldering: ₹14,500.
Validation and UPS upgrade recommendation
After replacement, the Mac Studio cold-booted successfully through 20 consecutive cold cycles over 2 days of bench testing, including deliberate overnight power cuts. The studio was advised to replace the undersized UPS with a unit rated for at least 1500VA for the Mac Studio plus display stack, and to configure the UPS to cut power cleanly rather than allowing voltage sag during load transitions. Why Indian studio environments stress hardware this way
Indian power infrastructure in commercial areas — even in IT hubs — carries significant voltage variation between phases. Brownouts (low-voltage events, not full cuts) are more damaging to capacitor-based components than outright outages because they create sustained stress across the dielectric layer. A Mac Studio in an Indian studio environment without proper power conditioning is running on borrowed time for its capacitor-heavy components. This is not unique to Apple hardware — it affects all desktop workstations, but the Mac Studio’s compact board design places NVRAM components closer to the main power inlet path than larger tower designs. A good UPS with automatic voltage regulation (AVR) costs ₹8,000–₹15,000 for studio setups. It is the best accessory investment for any workstation in India.

Signs to act on
If your Mac Studio or Mac Mini cold-boots intermittently, requires specific power-cable sequences to boot, or shows no response for the first 10–30 minutes after a complete power cut, bring it in for board-level diagnosis before the fault progresses to a permanent no-boot state.
