A 3D animator in Rishikesh, aged 38, noticed that his Lenovo Legion had started to roar during renders, then slowed down and sometimes shut off in the middle of a long export. He wanted to know what the repair would cost before sending it. This post is for any Legion owner in the same position. It explains what makes a fan or thermal repair cost more or less, what you can safely check yourself, and what the technician will tell you after opening the laptop.
What decides the cost of a Lenovo Legion fan and thermal repair?
Short answer: The cost follows the parts and labour needed: a clean-out, a replacement fan, a replacement heatsink, fresh thermal paste and pads, or several together. Dual-fan layouts, the model generation and how much dust has built up change the work. We can quote only after the laptop is opened, and the quote is shared for your approval.
The story above is a typical scenario drawn from the kind of case a repair bench sees, not a record of one real customer.
Why does a Legion get hot in the first place?
A Legion packs a powerful processor and graphics chip into a compact body. These parts make a lot of heat, which is carried away by heat pipes to a heatsink, and a fan blows the heat out through vents. Dust clogs the fins, thermal paste (the grey compound between chip and heatsink) dries out, and fan bearings wear. Any one of these raises temperatures, and the laptop slows itself down to protect the chip.
What are the main cost factors?
Fan versus heatsink
A noisy or slow fan is the simpler repair. A heatsink that is blocked with compacted dust, bent or poorly seated is more involved. A technician decides which one you need by checking fan speed, airflow and temperatures, not by guessing from noise alone.
Dual fans and heat pipes
Some Legion models use two fans and several heat pipes to serve both the processor and the graphics chip. One fan can be healthy while the other has failed, so the quote may include one fan or both. The layout varies by model, so check your exact model number rather than assuming.
Paste, pads and dust load
Thermal paste is the cheapest part but the labour of reaching it is not. Thermal pads (soft squares that carry heat from memory and power chips) can tear when removed, so a good technician checks them. A laptop used for years in a dusty room needs more cleaning time than a clean one.
Heat that has hurt other parts
If the laptop ran hot for a long time, other parts can suffer: the battery may swell, plastic near the fan may warp, and the board can show heat damage. If the base bulges or the keyboard lifts, stop using the laptop and have the battery checked.
What can I safely check myself?
- Listen: is the fan loud all the time, grinding, or silent when it should be spinning?
- Look at the vents and, with the laptop off, shine a torch in: is dust packed in?
- Check that the laptop sits on a hard surface with room under it.
- Use a free temperature monitor and note the readings at idle and under load.
- Check the Lenovo Vantage app (Lenovo's own settings tool) for a power or performance mode that may be set too high.
Do not open the laptop and pour liquids or use compressed air at full blast into the fan. Spinning the fan with a blast of air can damage it. Hold the blades still if you use air at all.
Dust, heat and power cuts for a Legion in India
Long summers, dusty rooms and lengthy gaming or rendering sessions put real load on a Legion's cooling. Power cuts and voltage swings can also stress the charger and the board when the laptop runs hard on mains power. A hard stand, a surge-protected socket and a cleaning every several months matter more than any one fix. See our post on why a Legion or ThinkPad runs hot.
When to get help
Ask a technician when the fan is noisy or silent, the laptop shuts off during games or renders, temperatures stay high after cleaning the vents, or the base is warped. See our Lenovo fan repair page and the Lenovo laptop repair hub. We offer doorstep service around Secunderabad and across Hyderabad, and laptops can reach us by courier from anywhere in India. ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us. The exact price comes after diagnosis and is shared for approval before any work. If your Legion is under Lenovo's warranty, Lenovo's authorised service is the first place to go; we repair laptops that are out of warranty or when you choose independent repair.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Do not wait for a shutdown. A fan that has become louder than before is an early message from the laptop. A timely clean-out and fresh paste cost less effort than a fan, a heatsink and a battery together. Ask for the findings in plain words before approving any work.
