If you are an accountant, a consultant or a designer, your ThinkPad probably holds client files that are not only yours. When a drive fails, the laptop goes for repair and the question is: where does the old drive end up? Lenovo offers a plan called Keep Your Drive for this. This post explains what Lenovo says it does, what it does not do, and how to decide whether to add it, compared with a good backup and an independent repair.
Is Keep Your Drive worth adding for a ThinkPad with client files?
Short answer: It can be, if the files on your ThinkPad are confidential and you want to keep the physical drive when it fails. If the plan is already active, use it. If not, decide by how sensitive your files are. Whatever you choose, it does not replace a backup, so keep one yourself.
What Lenovo says Keep Your Drive does
Lenovo's India services pages list Keep Your Drive among its warranty upgrade types, next to warranty extensions, a sealed battery warranty and others, depending on the device. Lenovo states: if your hard drive fails, you are entitled to keep the failed drive before handing the PC over to Lenovo for repair. In plain words, you hold on to the storage unit that held your files, so it does not leave your hands during the repair. What it does not do
- It does not copy your files or recover them. If the drive has failed, the files on it may be unreachable, and Keep Your Drive does not change that.
- It does not cover a drive that is not part of a Lenovo repair. It applies to Lenovo's repair route.
- It does not remove the need to tell your clients if a drive holding their data has failed, where your contract requires it.
How to decide: a simple checklist
The independent alternative, fairly
Laptop Repair World is an independent repair shop, founded in 2007, with one store at MG Road, Secunderabad. We are not a Lenovo service centre and have no tie-up with Lenovo, so we cannot sell you Lenovo's plan. What we can do is the following.
- Record the condition, serial number and accessories when your ThinkPad is collected.
- State before work which parts are touched, and tell you in writing what will happen to your drive.
- Share a written quotation listing parts, labour, GST and the visit fee, approved by you before any work.
- Approve a revised quotation with you before any further paid work if testing finds another fault.
- Show the repaired function at a handover test, with a short written record of the work.

Heat, dust and courier distance in India
Drives in laptops used for long hours in warm rooms, or knocked in a bag during travel, wear faster. If you send a ThinkPad away by courier, pack it with a rigid cover and charge it first, because a drive can be damaged by a knock in transit. We accept laptops by courier from anywhere in India. A typical case (an illustration, not a real customer)
Suppose a self-employed accountant keeps client ledgers on a ThinkPad that is two years old. She adds Keep Your Drive, where Lenovo offers it for her model, saves a weekly copy to an encrypted external drive, and keeps a second copy in cloud storage. When the drive later fails, she keeps the failed unit, and her backup lets her carry on working. The plan did one job, and the backup did the other.
When to choose which route
If your ThinkPad is in warranty, or you hold Lenovo coverage that applies to the fault, use Lenovo's route first. - The ThinkPad shows a drive error or will not start.
- Your files open slowly or some have gone missing.
- You need to know what happens to your drive before a repair.
- You hold client data and want it handled with a written record.
