Picture a textile designer in Miyapur, 38 (a typical scenario, not a real customer), who needs her IdeaPad Slim 3 for patterns and client files. One morning it shows no light, no fan and no screen. A quote arrives that says 'board replacement'. Should she approve it, or ask whether a smaller part is at fault? This guide explains what a board is, how a component-level repair differs from a new board, what Lenovo says and what LRW can check, so you can decide with confidence.
Should you approve a new board straight away?
Your IdeaPad Slim 3 does not switch on. A quote says the board must be replaced. That may be right, but it is worth asking one question first: has the fault been traced to the board itself, and does the quote say how?
Short answer: use Lenovo first if warranty or a Lenovo plan covers the laptop. If you are out of coverage, ask for a diagnosis that names the failed part. Then compare the proposed fix, a new board or a smaller repair, in a written quote. If the quote feels broad, get a second one.
What is the board, and why does it matter?
The board (also called the motherboard or logic board) is the main circuit board. The processor, memory connections, charging circuit and many small parts sit on it. When a laptop shows no sign of life, the cause can be the board, the charger, the charging socket, the battery or one small part on the board.
A new board means swapping the whole board. A component-level repair means finding the one failed part on the board, such as a power-control chip or a tiny fuse-like part, and fixing only that. Which one is possible depends on the fault, how the damage looks and whether parts can be sourced.
What does Lenovo say about paid repair?
Lenovo's India services page lists an 'Out-of-warranty Services' tile, but the page itself gives no method or charges. It does not say whether the request is online, carry-in or onsite. So check Lenovo's support page for how to request out-of-warranty service, and ask what the quote will include.
If your IdeaPad is within warranty, or you hold a Lenovo plan, that route should come first. Check your warranty status on Lenovo's support site.
What can an independent repair assess?
LRW can diagnose whether the fault is the board, the charging path or a smaller part. When the laptop is collected, its condition, serial number and accessories are recorded. The written quotation then lists parts, labour, GST and the visit fee, and says which repair is proposed and what type of part is used: original, compatible or refurbished, each with its own warranty.
If testing finds another fault, a revised quotation is approved by you before any further paid work. After the repair, the working function is shown to you at handover with a short written record, and a follow-up call or message comes after the laptop is returned. Same-day completion is possible for eligible jobs when the part is on hand and a technician is free. Board work is delicate, and not every board fault is repairable; confirmation comes only after diagnosis.
How do the two routes compare?
Power cuts and voltage swings: what to watch in India?
Sudden power cuts, loose extension boards and low-quality chargers can stress the charging circuit. If your laptop stopped after a power surge or a storm, say so at the start. It helps the technician look at the charging path first. Use a surge-protected socket and the original charger or a trusted compatible one.
A typical case
A designer's IdeaPad has no light. The charger is tested and found fine. The technician checks the charging socket and the power circuit and finds one failed part. The written quote names that part and the repair, so the designer can compare it with a quote for a whole new board. In another typical case, the board is found damaged beyond a small repair, and the quote then proposes a replacement board with the part type named. Either way, approve only the line items you understand.
Which route makes sense when?
- In warranty or under a Lenovo plan: use Lenovo.
- Out of coverage, cause unclear: get a diagnosis in writing.
- Quote says 'board' with no explanation: ask for a second quote.
- Important files inside: back up if possible, or ask about data recovery before any repair.

When to get help
- No light, no fan and no sound when you press the power button.
- The laptop stopped after a power cut, a spill or a drop.
- The charger works on another laptop but not this one.
- You have a quote that says 'board' but gives no reason.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Before any board work, ask for the diagnosis in plain words: which part failed and how it was tested. Keep your charger with the laptop, because a faulty charger can look like a dead board. If your work files are on the laptop, tell us before repair so we handle it with extra care.
