Lenovo IdeaCentre desktop will not power on: what to check

LR LRW Engineer Team ~5 min read

Key takeaways

  • Start outside the case. Test the wall socket with another device, try a different power cable, and remove every USB device. These three checks can fix a desktop that seems to have no power.
  • What the desktop does when you press the button helps a technician. Note whether there are no lights, a fan twitch, or a short start followed by switching off, and write it down.
  • Reseating the memory (RAM, the short-term working memory) is safe only if you are comfortable opening the case. Switch off at the wall and unplug the cable before you open anything.
  • A power supply unit (PSU) and the motherboard cannot be judged by eye. Do not open the power supply box itself, because it can hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged.

This post is for anyone with a Lenovo IdeaCentre desktop, or another Lenovo desktop, that has stopped starting: a shop owner whose billing PC is silent on Monday morning, a parent whose child's study desktop shows no light, or an accountant staring at a black box. You will be able to run six safe checks in about fifteen minutes, understand what each symptom suggests in plain words, and know exactly when it is time to hand the desktop to a technician instead of trying more.

Why will my Lenovo IdeaCentre desktop not power on?

Short answer: The cause is often outside the computer: a dead wall socket, a loose or damaged power cable, a stuck front button, or a faulty USB device pulling the start-up down. If those are fine, the likely suspects are the power supply unit (PSU, the box that turns wall power into the small voltages the parts need), the memory, or the motherboard. The first group you can check yourself.

What does your desktop do when you press the button?

Describe the behaviour before you test anything. It tells a technician where to look.

What you seeWhat it can point to
No light, no sound, nothingWall socket, cable, switch on the extension board, or the PSU
Fan twitches once, then stopsPSU under strain, a short circuit, or a part the board rejects
Starts, then switches off in secondsOverheating protection, a USB device, memory, or the PSU
Lights and fans run but no screenMemory, graphics, or display cable; a different problem from no power

Which safe checks should you do first?

1. Test the wall socket and extension board

Plug a table lamp or phone charger into the same socket. Many Indian homes and shops run desktops through a surge-protected extension board; its switch or fuse can fail quietly. Try a different socket directly from the wall.

2. Change the power cable

The thick cable from the back of the desktop to the socket is the same type many monitors and printers use. Borrow one and try it. Also push the plug firmly into the back; it should not wiggle.

3. Check the switch at the back of the PSU

Some desktops have a small rocker switch near the power socket at the back. Make sure it is set to on (the I side). Other models do not have one, so skip this if you cannot find it.

4. Remove every USB device

Unplug pen drives, printers, webcams, phone cables and the USB hub. Leave only the keyboard and mouse. A device with a short circuit can stop a desktop from starting. Then press the front button for one full second.

5. Drain leftover power

Unplug the power cable, hold the front button for about 15 seconds (the exact method can differ by model), wait a minute, then plug back in and try again. This can clear small leftover charge that can keep the board confused.

6. Reseat the memory, only if comfortable

Switch off at the wall, unplug the cable, and touch bare metal on the case before you touch any part. Open the side panel, press the clips on each memory stick, lift it out and press it firmly back until both clips click. Do not force it. Stop here if anything looks burnt, swollen or wet.

Heat, dust and power cuts in Indian homes and shops

Dust can build up quickly in the dry months, and a clogged fan can make a desktop shut itself off for protection. Voltage dips and sudden power cuts can strain a PSU over the years, and a surge can damage it at once. A good stabiliser or a UPS (a battery unit that keeps the desktop running briefly when power goes) helps. If a desktop stopped working during or right after a power cut or lightning storm, do not keep pressing the button; each attempt can add damage. Our guide to power supply and graphics card compatibility explains how PSU size matters.

What a technician checks on the bench

  • PSU test: measuring the voltages under a load, not just with the desktop attached.
  • Standby voltage: the small voltage that is always present when the PSU is plugged in and which lets the power button work.
  • Board check: looking for burnt parts, swollen capacitors and short circuits on the motherboard.
  • Part isolation: starting the board with only the minimum parts attached to find which part blocks it.

When to get help

Ask a technician if the desktop has no response after the checks above, if you smell burning, hear a click or pop, or if the problem began after a power surge. Our Lenovo not powering on page explains what we do, and our Lenovo repair page lists the other services. If your desktop is still under Lenovo's warranty, take it to Lenovo's authorised service first; we are an independent repair service and work on desktops out of warranty or when the owner chooses independent repair. Doorstep pick-up is available across Hyderabad through our Lenovo service page for Secunderabad, and desktops can come by courier from elsewhere in India. ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us. Before any repair, back up what you can; our backup before repair guide shows how.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team

Write down the symptom, the checks you tried and whether a power cut came before the fault. A clear note saves bench time and avoids guesswork. Keep the desktop unplugged while it waits for a technician, and never open the power supply box. We quote after diagnosis, and you approve before any work starts.
