Why is my laptop webcam not working?
Short answer: The vast majority of "broken webcam" issues in India are not hardware failures at all — they are Windows privacy permission blocks, driver conflicts from updates, or a physical privacy shutter accidentally slid shut. Run through the software checks below before assuming hardware failure. If all software checks pass and the webcam still shows black or is not detected, a hardware module replacement is needed — and it is one of the cheapest laptop repairs on the bench.
How to fix a laptop webcam that is not working
Step 1: Check Windows privacy settings and the physical shutter
On Windows 11 and Windows 10, go to Settings → Privacy & security → Camera. Confirm that "Camera access" is turned On, and that the specific app you are trying to use (Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, Windows Camera) is listed and enabled. A Windows update can reset these permissions to Off without warning. This is the single most common cause of a sudden webcam blackout and takes 30 seconds to check.
Also check the physical lid. Many business laptops — Lenovo ThinkPad, HP EliteBook, Dell Latitude — have a mechanical privacy shutter: a small slider at the top of the screen bezel that physically covers the lens. If it is partly or fully closed, the camera shows black in every app. Look closely at the bezel above the screen; if you see a small plastic tab, slide it open. Many customers bring laptops to us with this exact issue — the shutter was moved in a bag and they did not realise it existed.
Step 2: Reinstall the camera driver
Open Device Manager (right-click Start → Device Manager), expand "Cameras" or "Imaging Devices". If you see a yellow warning triangle next to your webcam, the driver has a problem. Right-click and choose "Uninstall device" (tick "Delete the driver software" if the option appears), then restart. Windows reinstalls the driver on reboot. If the webcam appears in Device Manager but still shows black, right-click and choose "Disable", wait 10 seconds, then re-enable it. Also visit the manufacturer's support page (HP Support, Dell Support, Lenovo Support) and download the latest camera driver for your model — OEM drivers are more reliable than the generic Windows ones.
Step 3: Test in a different app and check app-level permissions
If Teams shows a black screen, open the built-in Windows Camera app (search "Camera" in Start). If Windows Camera works but Teams does not, the issue is a Teams permission or cache, not the hardware. Clear the Teams cache by closing Teams, navigating to %AppData%\Microsoft\Teams in File Explorer, and deleting the Cache and blob_storage folders. Restart Teams. If Windows Camera also shows black, the problem is driver or hardware — move to the next step. Our related guide on webcam repair service covers what a hardware diagnosis involves.
Step 4: The India angle — WFH wear after year 3
Laptops purchased around 2021–2022 for work-from-home use in India are now entering their third and fourth year of daily use. Built-in webcam modules are small circuit boards mounted behind the screen bezel, connected by a thin flex cable that routes through the hinge. After two to three years of daily lid opening and closing, this cable develops micro-cracks. The webcam stops being detected entirely — it disappears from Device Manager — rather than showing black. If your laptop's webcam was fine for two years and has now vanished from Device Manager, the cable is the most likely cause. A replacement module for most mid-range laptops is ₹1,800–₹3,500 and takes under an hour to install. Check the Asus webcam repair service as a reference for what brand-level webcam repair looks like.
When to call a laptop repair service (and what it costs in India)
When DIY ends
Call a technician when: the webcam does not appear in Device Manager at all (hardware not detected), Windows Camera shows a hardware error code, the webcam works intermittently (detected sometimes, not others — cable fault), or you hear a physical rattle from inside the lid when you shake it (module has come loose). These are all hardware-level issues that require opening the lid assembly.
Typical repair cost in India
Driver reinstall or permission fix: free. Webcam module replacement (most 14–15.6 inch laptops): ₹1,800–₹3,500. Webcam cable replacement: ₹800–₹1,500. Premium or slim bezel models (Dell XPS, MacBook, LG Gram): ₹3,000–₹4,500. We confirm the cost before any work starts — ₹149 doorstep visit for diagnosis.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Webcam repairs are among the fastest and cheapest we do. The module is a plug-in component behind the bezel — 30 to 60 minutes on the bench. The greater risk is customers who buy an external USB webcam as a workaround without knowing the built-in fix is ₹1,500. If you need the webcam for daily calls and it has stopped working, send a WhatsApp and we will diagnose at your door. Most of the time it is a settings issue — resolved without any parts at all.
