Why Indians working from home need a laptop stand
Short answer: When a laptop sits flat on a desk, the screen is roughly 15–20 cm below natural eye level. You hold your neck bent forward to see it. Over a 6–8 hour day, this sustained forward bend strains the cervical (neck) muscles and is the most common cause of WFH-related neck and upper back pain in India. A riser stand raises the screen to eye level, straightening the neck and eliminating that strain. Secondary benefit: the stand lifts the bottom vents off the desk, improving thermal performance — relevant in Indian summer conditions where room temperatures of 35°C+ put extra load on the cooling system. What to look for in a laptop stand for India
Adjustable vs fixed height — which matters more
A fixed-height stand elevates the laptop to a single predetermined angle (typically 15–25 degrees). These are compact, lightweight, and start around ₹800–₹1,200. For someone with a dedicated desk and a chair at a fixed height, a fixed stand works well. The limitation is that Indian homes often have mismatched furniture — a dining table used as a work desk paired with a different-height chair, or sitting cross-legged on the floor at a low table. A fixed stand tuned for one setup may be the wrong height for another.
An adjustable stand (₹1,500–₹3,500) lets you set height and tilt across 5–15 notches. This is worth the premium if you move the setup between rooms, if others in the household use it at different sitting heights, or if you sometimes sit on a higher chair. Multi-angle adjustable stands also let you find the sweet spot for your specific neck length and arm reach — important because the correct screen height varies by about 3–5 cm between a 5'2" and 5'11" seated adult.
For Indian living-room floor setups — working seated on a mat or carpet at a low table — a laptop stand is not the right tool. A lap desk with a built-in cushion is more appropriate for floor-level working.
Material — aluminium vs plastic and the heat factor
Laptop stands come in aluminium and plastic. Aluminium stands are heavier (400–800g typically), more stable under vigorous typing, and the material conducts heat away from the laptop's base passively — a minor but real advantage in summer. Plastic stands are lighter and more portable but flex noticeably when typing fast on a floating keyboard. For a fixed desk at home, aluminium is the better choice. For travel or carrying in a bag alongside the laptop, a foldable plastic or aluminium composite stand that compresses to under 1cm thickness is more practical.
The other material consideration is the contact surface. Stands with rubber or silicone pads at the contact points prevent the laptop from sliding and protect the bottom case from scratches. Metal-to-metal contact (aluminium stand touching an aluminium MacBook base) will scratch the laptop's anodised aluminium finish over time. Confirm the stand's contact pads before buying if you have a premium aluminium chassis laptop.
India-specific note — floor-level cooling vents
Most budget and mid-range Indian laptops (HP Pavilion, Lenovo IdeaPad, Dell Inspiron, Acer Aspire) draw intake air through vents on the bottom panel. When the laptop sits flat on a desk, the vents are compressed against the surface and airflow is partially blocked. In Indian summer — where ambient temperatures inside unairconditioned rooms can reach 38–42°C — this restricted airflow significantly raises internal temperatures. Even a 1cm riser at the rear of the laptop improves intake by 30–40%.
A stand that raises the rear of the laptop to 10–15cm height creates the most airflow improvement. ₹2,000–₹3,500 (premium adjustable): Smooth stepless height adjustment, full aluminium with rubber pads, foldable for travel, supports heavier gaming laptops (up to 6–8 kg). Worth it for large gaming laptops, MacBooks, or users who move the stand frequently.
