This is a typical scenario, not a real customer. Your laptop has a fault and you are about to hand it over: to a brand centre, a local shop, or a courier box going to another city. Your photos, college work, office files and bank statements are on its drive. The question is not only whether the laptop will be fixed, but what will be done with your data meanwhile. This post explains how the routes differ, what to back up, and the questions that get you a clear, written answer.
What happens to your drive when a laptop goes for repair?
Short answer: it depends on the route and on the fault. Some services replace or reimage storage (restore it to a fresh state), some keep it untouched, and some advise you to back up because data may be erased. Back up first, ask what the route does with your drive, and take the answer in writing.
Why does the drive matter at all?
The drive, either an SSD or a hard disk, is where your files, passwords saved in browsers and operating system live. A repair such as a new battery or a hinge does not need it. A repair such as a no-start fault, a motherboard job or a software fault may involve testing the system, which can mean starting Windows or running diagnostics. A drive that is wiped, replaced or reimaged cannot be brought back to the way it was, so back up first.
How do the different routes treat your drive?
We do not speak for any brand, so here is the general picture. A manufacturer's service terms may advise you to keep your own copy of your data or to remove personal information. A mail-in route sends the laptop by courier to a repair facility, so ask who handles it at each stage. An independent shop may handle your laptop on one bench, from start to finish. None of these is safe or unsafe by itself; what matters is the written terms and your own backup. Check each brand's own service terms, since they differ by brand and country.
At Laptop Repair World, we record the condition, serial number and accessories when the laptop is collected, and we can state in writing whether your drive will be accessed for the repair. For a no-start laptop, see our laptop data recovery page.
What should you do before handover?
- Copy your important files to an external drive or cloud storage. Our guide to backing up before repair shows the steps.
- Sign out of accounts you can sign out of, and note any passwords the repairer may need (share them only if truly needed).
- If your drive is encrypted with BitLocker or similar, keep your recovery key safe. Our post on BitLocker recovery explains why.
- Photograph the laptop and note the serial number.
- Ask in writing what will be done with the drive.
Do not hand over a laptop with no copy of your files unless the laptop will not start; if it will not, tell the repairer, so the drive is protected from the first step.
Which questions get a clear written answer?
Courier, monsoon and travel risks for a laptop and its data
If your laptop travels by courier across India, pack it with padding and keep it away from water. Monsoon humidity and rain can harm an open box, so wrap the laptop in a plastic bag inside the box. Heat in a courier van is another risk for a drive that is already unwell. A drive that clicks, or a laptop that has been dropped, should be switched off and not tried again; each restart can make recovery harder. Laptop Repair World accepts laptops by courier from anywhere in India; ask for the written terms for your case before you send.
How the drive question plays out
An accountant's laptop has a hinge that has loosened, and her tax files are on it. She asks two repairers the same question: will you need the drive? The first says no, since a hinge needs no access to it, and writes that into the quotation. The second cannot say. She chooses the one that writes it down, and she still copies her files to an external drive first, because a written promise is not a substitute for a backup.
When is the manufacturer's route the better choice?
If your laptop is in warranty, or covered by a plan, the manufacturer's route may be the right one, because the repair is already paid for. Ask the brand what it does with the drive, and read its current service terms. Some plans cover an accidental-damage claim, a recall or a free programme; check your paperwork before an outside repair. In every case, your own backup is the safest protection.
When to get help
- The laptop will not start and your files are not backed up.
- You hear clicking, or the drive disappears from the system.
- You are about to send the laptop away and want to know what happens to the drive.
- Someone suggests formatting the drive as the first step.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Think of three copies: the laptop, an external drive, and cloud storage. If you have two of them, a repair becomes far less worrying. And whichever route you choose, ask the one question that matters: will my drive be accessed, and what will be done with it?
