Why does the pre-monsoon window matter for laptops in India?
Short answer: India’s monsoon brings two threats to laptops — direct liquid exposure and sustained ambient humidity. Ambient relative humidity above 70% causes moisture to condense on cool metal traces inside the motherboard, a process called hygroscopic corrosion that builds up silently over the three-month season and produces mysterious faults in October and November. The pre-monsoon window (April to mid-May) is when you fix structural vulnerabilities before they become liquid damage repairs. The pre-monsoon checklist — five areas to cover
Step 1: Professional internal cleaning (the most critical task)
Dust acts as a hygroscopic sponge — it absorbs and holds moisture. A laptop with a dusty heatsink and fan assembly enters the monsoon with built-in moisture traps. Combine this with a thermal paste check: high CPU temperatures during monsoon months are often misdiagnosed as overheating when the real cause is degraded thermal paste compounded by humidity. Step 2: Full data backup — the insurance you actually need
Liquid damage from monsoon-related incidents (a wet bag, a balcony draft, an accidental spill in a humid kitchen) is the leading cause of permanent data loss in India’s repair segment. Before the season, ensure you have: a complete backup to an external drive stored separately from the laptop; and a cloud sync of critical documents via Google Drive, OneDrive, or iCloud. Step 3: Physical protection — bag, ports, and storage
A water-resistant laptop bag (not just a sleeve) is the single most effective physical protection during commutes. Look for IPX4-rated bags or bags with a separate rain cover. Silica gel packets (available at stationary or hardware shops for ₹30–₹80 per pack) should go inside the bag pocket. Keep USB and HDMI port covers installed on unused ports: fine water droplets entering open ports during rain and condensation are a known corrosion pathway. Step 4: The India angle — power surge risk during monsoon

Before the season, check that your surge protector has a clamping voltage below 400 V and a response time under 1 nanosecond.
