Picture a laptop on a table in a Madhapur flat, plugged into a shared socket behind a TV unit, and the charging light stays off. Before you decide the battery is gone, a few simple tests can tell you where the fault really is. This post walks you through them in order, from the socket to the charge port, with what is safe to try and what to leave alone. If the laptop still will not charge, you will know what to tell the technician when you book a visit.
Why is my laptop not charging, and what should I test first?
Short answer: Test from the wall inward: the socket, the extension board, the adapter (the charger box), the cable, then the laptop's charge port. Homes often use shared sockets and multi-plug boards that loosen or overheat, so the fault is often outside the laptop. If every step fails, the battery or the charging circuit may be at fault and needs a technician.
Step 1: The socket and extension board
Plug the charger straight into a wall socket you know works, such as one that powers a lamp. Avoid the extension board for the test. A worn board can give weak power that an adapter will not accept. If a socket feels hot, smells burnt or sparks, stop using it and switch off at the main switch.
Step 2: The adapter light and brick
Many adapters have a small light. If it is off with a working socket, the adapter may have failed. A buzzing sound, a very hot brick or a burning smell are also warning signs. Replace a failing adapter instead of using it; our story on roadside charger damage shows how a poor replacement can harm the laptop.
Step 3: The cable
Run your fingers along the whole cable. Kinks near the plug or near the box are common break points. Wiggle the plug gently while watching the charge light on the laptop. If the light flickers, the cable or plug is loose or broken inside. Do not wrap tape around it as a repair.
Step 4: The charge port
Look into the port with a torch. Lint or dust can stop the plug from seating fully. Switch the laptop off and unplug it before you touch it. Our guide on cleaning a charging port safely shows what is safe. If the metal pin inside looks bent or the port moves when you touch the plug, stop; that is a repair job.
Step 5: The battery and software
If the laptop says 'plugged in, not charging', restart it first, then check that it is running the latest updates. A tired battery can also refuse to charge, and a swollen one is dangerous. If the case is bulging or the trackpad lifts, stop charging and do not press on it. Our battery replacement cost guide explains what a new battery involves.
Charging problems in Madhapur flats and offices
Madhapur visits can be to a flat, a gated office, a coworking desk or a reception handoff, and the fault is easier to trace if you note whether it happens with the charger, a dock or an external screen. Entry permission and visitor-pass details are confirmed first, so share the building name, the access steps and a contact who can let us in. Madhapur is a service area for us; the only store is at MG Road, Secunderabad, and there is no Madhapur branch. Extension boards are easy to add over time in any home, so the socket test matters here. Voltage dips during power cuts and Hyderabad's summer heat are also hard on adapters, so a surge protector is a small, sensible purchase.
If the laptop was issued by your employer, check your employer's IT or asset policy before anyone opens it or replaces its charger.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
When you book, tell us three things: the laptop model, what the adapter light does, and whether the laptop charges at all at any angle. Keep the original charger with the laptop and do not try other adapters on it, since a wrong voltage can harm the charging circuit.
