What is the BIOS chip and why does it fail?
Short answer: The BIOS chip (Basic Input/Output System — the laptop's firmware that runs before Windows loads) is a small flash memory chip soldered onto the motherboard. When it fails, the laptop either refuses to start, shows a blank screen with no manufacturer logo, or enters an infinite reboot loop. Repair costs ₹800–₹3,500 depending on whether the chip needs reflashing or full replacement. Full board swap would cost ₹8,000–₹18,000 — chip-level repair is significantly more cost-effective.
How to diagnose a BIOS chip failure
Step 1: Identify the symptom pattern
BIOS failures produce distinctive symptoms. The laptop powers on (fan spins, LEDs light), but the screen stays black — no manufacturer logo, no Windows loading screen. Alternatively, you may see a "BIOS checksum error" message, or the system loops back to a recovery screen. If the problem appeared immediately after a BIOS update attempt that was interrupted by a power cut or battery drain, a BIOS corruption is the most likely cause. In Hyderabad and other Indian cities where brief power outages occur unexpectedly, this scenario is surprisingly common. See our how-to guide on laptop stuck at BIOS for software-side BIOS lockouts.
Step 2: Rule out RAM, display, and GPU faults
A blank-screen no-boot can also be caused by failed RAM (also called DRAM), a bad GPU, or a disconnected screen cable — all of which look identical from the outside. A technician hooks the laptop to an external monitor to confirm whether the GPU is working. If the external display shows output but the internal screen is blank, the fault is the display cable or panel, not BIOS. If neither internal nor external displays show anything after the manufacturer logo stage, the BIOS is the leading suspect. For broader context, read our post on laptop motherboard failure signs.
Step 3: BIOS programmer diagnosis
A BIOS programmer is a device that clips onto the BIOS chip and reads its firmware directly, bypassing the motherboard's boot process. A technician reads the chip — if the read is successful but the firmware is corrupted (wrong checksum), a reflash restores normal operation without replacing the chip. If the chip does not respond to the programmer at all, it is physically failed and must be replaced with a new chip pre-flashed with the correct firmware file for that specific laptop model and board revision.
Step 4: The India angle — power cuts during updates
BIOS updates are critically sensitive to interruptions. The update process erases the existing firmware and writes new code in sequential blocks — if power is cut mid-write, the chip is left with partial code that produces an unbootable state. Always update the BIOS on battery with the charger connected — and always use a UPS or verify that the power supply is stable. Manufacturers like HP and Dell have BIOS recovery modes (hold Win+B or Win+V on HP, for example) that can sometimes restore firmware from a USB drive even without a working BIOS — try this before booking a repair.

When to stop DIY and call
Call a technician if: the manufacturer's recovery key combination does not restore the BIOS, or if you have no access to a BIOS programmer. Incorrect reflashing with the wrong firmware file can permanently brick the chip — leave this to someone with the correct firmware image for your exact model variant.
Typical repair cost
BIOS reflash (existing chip intact): ₹800–₹1,500. BIOS chip replacement (new chip + correct firmware): ₹1,500–₹3,500. Apple MacBook T2 / security chip equivalent: ₹3,000–₹6,000. Full motherboard replacement (only if chip-level repair is not possible): ₹8,000–₹18,000. The right firmware file is the most critical element — even a minor board revision difference produces a non-bootable result.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
We see at least 3–4 BIOS corruption cases every month from power-cut-interrupted updates. Our standard advice: use the manufacturer's Windows-based BIOS update utility (not a third-party one), and never run a BIOS update unless the laptop is on a UPS or the charger is plugged in on a stable power line. If you are outside Hyderabad, ship the device to us — BIOS reflashing is a mail-in repair that does not require doorstep service.
