Keep your Windows 10 PC or buy a new laptop in India?

Key takeaways

  • Microsoft's Extended Security Updates for personal Windows 10 PCs now run to 12 October 2027, not 13 October 2026. Microsoft disclosed the extra year on 25 June 2026.
  • The extension covers personal devices only. PCs managed by a company, school or organisation are not included. PCs that are enrolled are covered automatically.
  • A working Windows 10 PC can be kept for now. Replace it when the disk is failing, the PC cannot run what you need, or the last security update date nears.
  • Copy your billing data and files to a second drive today, whatever you decide. A backup costs little and a lost accounts file costs a great deal.

You run a small shop, and your billing PC still runs Windows 10. People tell you it has expired and that you must buy a new laptop at once. You do not have to decide in a panic. This guide explains what Microsoft has extended, what it does not cover, how to check if your PC can move to Windows 11, and when replacing is the sensible step.

Should I keep my Windows 10 PC or buy a new laptop?

Short answer: You can keep it for now. Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (security fixes for Windows 10 after its normal support ended) now run to 12 October 2027 for personal devices, and enrolled PCs are covered automatically. The date was extended by Microsoft, as disclosed on 25 June 2026, from 13 October 2026. Use the extra time to plan, back up and replace only when you have a reason.

What exactly did Microsoft extend?

The earlier end date for consumer Windows 10 updates was 13 October 2026. Microsoft added a year, so the new date is 12 October 2027. Some older pages still show the earlier date, so trust Microsoft's own page on Extended Security Updates over any shop sign or old forum post.

QuestionAnswer
New end date for personal Windows 10 PCs12 October 2027
Old date that many sites still show13 October 2026
Does it cover office or company-managed PCs?No, personal devices only
Do I need to do anything?Enrolled PCs are covered automatically; check the Microsoft page for your PC

What these updates give you is security fixes only. You do not get new features, and Microsoft's help for other problems may be limited, so treat the extra year as time to prepare.

Can my PC run Windows 11 instead?

Many Windows 10 PCs can move to Windows 11 for free, but not all. Windows 11 needs a fairly recent processor, a security chip called TPM 2.0 (a small chip that guards your sign-in and drive lock) and Secure Boot (a start-up check that blocks tampered software). Microsoft's PC Health Check app tells you whether your PC qualifies. Our guide to Windows 10 to 11 migration in India explains the steps.

If the app says your PC cannot run Windows 11, you can stay on Windows 10 until the update date, then replace the PC.

When is replacing the better choice?

  • The hard disk is old, clicks, or takes minutes to start. A spinning disk wears out, and a fast SSD (a flash storage drive with no moving parts) can make an old PC feel new, so ask about an upgrade first.
  • Your billing or accounting software now asks for a newer Windows.
  • The PC overheats, restarts or freezes during the working day.
  • Repair costs approach the price of a new machine.

If none of these apply, a clean-up, more storage or a fresh Windows install may be enough. Ask for the quote in writing before any work starts.

Dust, heat and power cuts around a shop PC

A shop PC sits in dust, heat and unsteady power. Voltage dips and power cuts can corrupt files and cause sudden disk faults, so a UPS (a battery box that keeps the PC running for a few minutes) is worth more than a faster processor. Keep the cabinet and vents free of dust, and do not run a PC in a closed cupboard. Do not switch the PC off by pulling the plug while Windows is updating. Rupee prices for new laptops move often, so compare shops and ask for the exact memory and storage in writing.

Back up first, then decide

Copy your billing data, bills, photos and contacts to an external drive and, if you can, to an online folder. Our 3-2-1 backup plan shows a simple routine. Never replace or reinstall Windows before the backup is verified by opening a few files from the copy.

When to get help

  • The PC will not start, or Windows keeps restarting.
  • The disk makes clicking sounds or files will not open.
  • You want to move to Windows 11 but are afraid of losing billing data.
  • The PC is very slow and you are unsure whether to repair or replace it.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team

The extra year is a gift of time, not a reason to wait. Spend the first week on a backup and a check of your PC. Spend the next months deciding calmly with that backup safe. Whether you keep or replace, your shop data is protected, and that is what matters most.
