You may run a small shop, and the billing laptop on your counter still has Windows 10. You have heard that support was ending, and now that the screen is dim or the battery is weak, you wonder whether to repair it or buy a new one. This guide gives the current date, explains what it means for your laptop, and helps you decide what to repair, what to leave and what to ask the technician.
Is it still worth fixing a Windows 10 laptop?
Short answer: Yes, in many cases. Microsoft has extended security updates for personal Windows 10 PCs to 12 October 2027 (reported on 25 June 2026), and enrolled PCs are covered automatically. A reasonable repair, such as a battery, screen or SSD, can give you another useful year or more. A repair that costs nearly as much as a new laptop is the one to question.
What is the new date?
Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESU, a programme of security fixes after normal support ends) for consumers were first due to end on 13 October 2026. Microsoft then added a year, so the date is now 12 October 2027. It applies to personal devices only, not to PCs managed by a company or institution. Microsoft explains this on its Extended Security Updates page. If you see the earlier date on another page, the Microsoft ESU page is the one to follow.
Which repairs can still make sense?
Battery
A new battery is often an affordable way to make an old laptop comfortable again. If you mostly use it at a counter with the charger plugged in, even a worn battery may be acceptable, but a swollen battery needs replacing at once.
SSD or storage
An SSD (a fast storage drive with no moving parts) can make an old laptop feel much quicker. If the laptop uses an old spinning hard disk, our SSD and hard disk upgrade page explains what is possible.
Screen
A cracked screen is a bigger spend because the panel is the costly part. If the rest of the laptop is healthy, it can still be a fair repair.
Motherboard
A failed motherboard (the main circuit board) is where the sums often stop adding up. Do not approve a board repair until the fault is confirmed and the quote is in writing.
What about moving to Windows 11?
Windows 11 needs a reasonably recent chip and a security chip called TPM. Many older laptops do not meet this. Microsoft's PC Health Check app tells you whether yours does. If it does not, the extension gives you time to plan. Our Windows 10 vs 11 migration guide covers the choice, and our operating system installation page covers a fresh install. Take a full backup before reinstalling Windows, because a reinstall can erase the drive.
What does it cost?
We do not quote a figure in advance. The exact quote comes after diagnosis and is shared for your approval before any work begins. The price depends on the part, the model and the labour. A useful rule: if the quote is close to the price of a new laptop that does what you need, compare both before you decide.
Shop hours, heat and power cuts
A shop laptop often runs for long hours in heat and dust, with voltage dips and power cuts. Use a surge-protected socket, clean the vents, and keep a backup on a pen drive or cloud storage, because a sudden power cut can damage data. In the humid monsoon months, keep the laptop away from damp walls. If your shop is far from a service centre, courier adds days, so plan for the time without the laptop.
When to get help
- The laptop restarts on its own, or freezes during billing.
- The battery bulges or the charger gets very hot.
- The laptop will not start, and your accounts are on it.
- You are unsure whether it can run Windows 11.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Before you decide, write down what the laptop must do for you every day, such as billing, printing and a browser. If an inexpensive repair keeps those tasks running smoothly, there is no need to hurry into a new purchase. Keep a backup, and revisit the decision well before the support date.
