The IPL surge pattern we see every year
Short answer: During IPL season, peak electricity demand from air conditioners, televisions, and fans causes strain on residential grids across Indian cities. Power cuts become more frequent, and each time electricity is restored after a cut, there is often a brief voltage spike. Six laptops arrived at our Secunderabad workshop in the span of a week — all from homes that had been watching IPL matches, all non-functional after a power-cut recovery event. Five were repairable at component level. One required a BIOS chip reflash. None needed a full board replacement.
What actually happens to a laptop during a power surge
Step 1: The damage is on power return, not during the cut
This is the most misunderstood aspect of power-surge damage. When electricity cuts out, your laptop simply stops receiving power from the charger — the battery takes over, or if it is already depleted, the machine switches off. No damage so far. The problem occurs when power is restored.
The moment the electricity comes back on, the first wave of current is not always clean. Grid restoration involves capacitors and inductors in the supply network settling to their target voltage, and this settling process can send a brief spike — sometimes 300–600V compared to the normal 230V — down the line before the voltage stabilises. A surge lasts milliseconds. That is long enough. The power IC on the laptop's motherboard is designed to handle normal input voltage variations, but a 600V spike bypasses its operating range entirely.
Step 2: What gets damaged — a component-level view
In our six IPL-season cases, the damage pattern was consistent across all machines: the DC-DC converter circuits (electronic components that step down the charger’s voltage to the lower voltages the processor and RAM need) were damaged in four cases, and the BIOS chip (a small storage chip that holds the laptop's startup instructions) was corrupted in two. The adapter itself was the primary casualty in three machines — it absorbed the worst of the spike and failed, which actually protected the laptop's motherboard in those cases.
This is why the adapter is not just a power accessory but a genuine protective component. A laptop adapter that is sacrificed in a surge is doing exactly what it should — taking the hit so the board survives. Step 3: What a surge strip actually does (and what it doesn’t)
A good surge protector contains components called MOVs (Metal Oxide Varistors — small disc-shaped components that absorb excess voltage and dissipate it as heat). When a voltage spike arrives, the MOV activates in nanoseconds and clamps the voltage to a safe level before it reaches your devices. The laptop sees normal voltage.
A standard extension board from a hardware shop — the flat white plastic kind that costs ₹100–₹200 — contains none of this. It is literally just a wire with sockets. It offers zero protection. A genuine surge strip with ISI certification and a joule rating above 300J costs ₹400–₹800 and can absorb dozens of typical residential surges before its MOVs degrade. It is among the highest-return-on-investment items for home and office electronics.
Step 4: The India-specific context
India’s power infrastructure varies significantly between cities and within neighbourhoods of the same city. Older residential wiring, shared transformers, and variable grid load during peak demand events (IPL finals, Diwali night, summer afternoons) create surge conditions that are more frequent than in countries with more uniform grid infrastructure. Signs your laptop was surge-damaged
A surge-damaged laptop will typically: show no response to the power button at all, power on for a second and then shut off, show the charging LED on the adapter but no response on the laptop, or in BIOS-chip cases, reach the brand splash screen and then hang indefinitely. If your laptop was plugged in during a power-cut recovery event and is now behaving any of these ways, bring it in before assuming the worst.
