Is the iMac M5 worth buying in India?
Short answer: For Indian home users, small business owners, teachers, and casual creators who want a beautiful all-in-one desktop with no cable clutter, the iMac M5 is the best all-in-one money can buy in India. At ₹1,34,990 for the base configuration it is not cheap, but the combination of M5 chip performance, a 4.5K Retina display, and macOS's reliability makes it compelling. The key caveat: buy AppleCare+ at the time of purchase — iMac repairs out of warranty are expensive and require specialist centres.
What is new in the iMac M5
The M5 chip in an iMac
The iMac M5 ships with either the base M5 (8-core CPU, 10-core GPU) or the upgraded M5 (10-core CPU, 16-core GPU) — the same chip family as the MacBook Air M5, but in a desktop thermal envelope that allows sustained performance. Unlike the fanless MacBook Air, the iMac has active cooling — two fans and a heatsink inside the chassis — which means it maintains that M5 performance under sustained load without throttling. For India's hot climate, this is significant: a task that throttles on the fanless Air will complete at full speed on the iMac.
CPU benchmark performance is roughly 25% higher than the M4 iMac. For 4K video editing in Final Cut Pro, photo batch processing in Lightroom, and large spreadsheet operations in Excel, the M5 iMac handles everything without hesitation. The jump is most visible on the M5 Max professional tier, but the base M5 is genuinely fast for home and office use.
Display improvements
The M5 iMac's 24-inch 4.5K Retina display (4480 × 2520 resolution at 218 pixels per inch — meaning individual pixels are invisible at normal viewing distance) gets a brightness increase to 500 nits standard brightness and 1,000 nits peak, up from the M4's 500 nits standard. In bright Indian rooms with direct sunlight, the higher peak brightness makes a practical difference in readability. The display covers the P3 wide colour gamut (a wider range of colours than standard sRGB) and is factory calibrated — good enough for photography and video work without additional calibration.
Connectivity and port layout
The iMac M5 keeps the same port layout as the M4: two Thunderbolt 4 ports (which also carry USB 4 and DisplayPort) on the back, plus two USB-A ports and a headphone jack on the right side of the display. The MagSafe power connector is on the back — a clean setup. Power stability — UPS is mandatory
The iMac is a desktop machine with no battery buffer. A power cut during active work can corrupt open files, and a voltage spike on power restoration can damage the internal power supply circuit. Service reality in India
The iMac is a thin, tightly integrated all-in-one. The logic board, display panel, power supply, and fan assembly are packed into a chassis 11.5 mm thin. Opening it for any repair requires removing the magnetically attached display glass and navigating a tight internal layout — it is not the kind of machine a general repair shop should attempt. A comparable Windows all-in-one from HP, Dell, or Lenovo in the ₹80,000–₹1,20,000 range typically uses an Intel Core Ultra 7 or AMD Ryzen processor with a 1080p or 1440p display. The iMac M5's 4.5K display, M5 chip efficiency, and macOS ecosystem (especially for iPhone integration) justify the premium for users already in the Apple ecosystem.
