Your HP ProBook 440 G8 has a keyboard problem: a few keys do nothing, or a whole row has stopped working. The repairer offers two parts, a refurbished keyboard or a new compatible one, and you must pick. This post explains what each is, what HP itself states about part warranty, how to compare the choices on a written quote, and when to use HP first. You will be able to choose the part type that suits your laptop and your budget without guessing.
Refurbished or new compatible: which keyboard should you choose?
Short answer: Pick the part that comes with a clear written warranty and a clear part type on the quote. A refurbished original and a new compatible keyboard can both do the job. If your ProBook 440 G8 is still in warranty or under a care plan, ask HP first.
What is the difference between the two parts?
A refurbished keyboard is a used original part that has been tested and cleaned before resale. A compatible keyboard is a newly made part that is built to fit your model but is not made by HP. An original new part comes from the brand's own supply. Each has its own fit, feel and warranty, and each should be named on your quote. The ProBook 440 G8 keyboard also sits close to other parts, so a good fit matters for the keys, the backlight if your unit has one, and the connector.
A low price with no written warranty is a poor bargain on either part. If the keyboard fails again after a few weeks, you will pay twice.
What does HP say about part warranty?
HP's Limited Warranty and Support Guide for India says replacement parts are warranted to be free from defects in material or workmanship for thirty days or, for the remainder of the Limited Warranty Period of the HP product they are replacing or in which they are installed, whichever is longer. That wording applies to warranty service. HP's support pages do not state a part warranty for a paid repair outside warranty or describe that route. So ask HP, or check HP's support page, for the options for your laptop. The guide is on HP India's warranty guide.
If you still have warranty or a care plan, ask HP before anyone opens the laptop, and check HP's terms on repairs by others. Our note on HP Care Pack versus independent repair explains the trade-off.
How does Laptop Repair World handle a ProBook keyboard?
Laptop Repair World was founded in 2007 and has one store at MG Road, Secunderabad. We offer doorstep service across Hyderabad and accept laptops by courier from anywhere in India. We assess the keyboard first, because a spill, a loose cable or a software setting can look like a failed keyboard. Our written quotation lists parts, labour, GST and the visit fee before any work, and names the part as original, compatible or refurbished, with its own warranty.
If testing finds another fault, a revised quotation is approved before any further paid work. We record the laptop's condition, serial number and accessories at collection. Complimentary cleaning of the accessible area, the keyboard area here, comes with eligible repairs. After the repair, we show you every key working at a handover test, with a short written record, and follow up by call or message. Repairs carry a 30-day repair warranty, subject to its terms. That workmanship warranty is separate from the part warranty on the quote. No Fix No Fee means no repair charge if the fault is not fixed. For a doorstep visit, there is a ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us. The visit fee is waived only when you approve the repair. Hyderabad readers can see how our HP laptop service in Hyderabad works.
What does a typical case look like?
This is an illustrative scenario, not a record of a real customer. An office accountant's ProBook 440 G8 loses the keys for one row during month-end work. The warranty ended last year. The repairer offers a refurbished original and a new compatible part. She asks for each part's warranty in writing, checks that the layout matches her laptop, and chooses the one with the clearer terms. She does not pick on price alone, and she asks for the old keyboard back.
How do dust, heat and spills in Indian offices change the keyboard choice?
Dust settles under keys in homes and shops, and a cup of tea or a water bottle near the laptop is a common risk in busy offices. A spill can leave sticky residue or reach the board beneath, so tell the repairer if there was one. Liquid-damage treatment is separate work, and it is better to know before the quote than after. See our guide to laptop keyboard replacement cost for what moves a quote.
When is HP's route the better choice?
If the laptop is in warranty, or a care plan covers the fault, use HP first, because that is what the cover is for. Check the serial number label on the laptop and ask HP about its current options. If cover has ended, compare the written quotes. Our page on HP service centre versus independent repair lists the questions.
When to get help
- Several keys or a whole row stop responding.
- Keys stick, double-type or feel loose.
- There was a spill, even a small one.
- The laptop works with an external keyboard but not its own.
See our HP keyboard replacement page to book an assessment. We are open Monday to Saturday, 10 AM to 8 PM, on WhatsApp and phone at 7702503336.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Plug in an external keyboard before you decide. If it works normally, the fault is in the laptop's own keyboard or its cable, and the repairer can say which. Then ask for the part type and the part warranty in writing, and keep the old keyboard until you are satisfied.
