This guide is for anyone with an HP Pavilion, Victus, Envy, ProBook, EliteBook or similar laptop who has heard about Windows 11 26H2 and wants to know whether to install it, how to do it safely, and how to be sure it worked. You will be able to read your current Windows version in under a minute, run the update from Windows Update, and know what to try if the option does not appear.
How do I move my HP laptop to Windows 11 26H2?
Short answer: Open Settings, then Windows Update, install any waiting updates, restart, and click Check for updates. If 26H2 is offered to your laptop, choose Download and install. Afterwards press Windows key plus R, type winver and press Enter to confirm the version. Back up your files first and keep the charger connected throughout.
What happened on 29 September 2026?
According to Microsoft's release health page, Windows 11 26H2 reached general availability on 29 September 2026, with OS build 26300. PCWorld reported that it is delivered as a tiny enablement package of about 174 KB. An enablement package works like a switch: the new features are already inside your current Windows, and the package turns them on. That is why it installs far faster than a full upgrade.
Microsoft also states that devices on Windows 11 26H1 cannot move to 26H2. The 26H1 version was made for specific new-silicon laptops, such as those with Snapdragon X2 chips. If your HP shipped with 26H1, Windows Update will not offer 26H2, and that is by design, not a fault. Microsoft's Windows 11 release information page shows the current build numbers and what applies to each version.
How to check which version you have
- Press the Windows key and R together.
- Type winver and press Enter.
- Read the line that begins Version, and the OS Build number below it.
After a successful move to 26H2 the window should show 26H2. The build number starts with 26300. Build numbers get small additions after each monthly update, so a slightly longer number is normal. Step by step: update with Windows Update
Before you start
- Plug in the charger and use a stable internet connection.
- Back up your documents, photos and accounting files. Our guide on what to back up before Windows 11 26H2 lists the folders.
- Free up a few gigabytes of storage on the C drive if it is nearly full.
Run the update
- Open Settings, then Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates, install everything shown, and restart.
- Check again. If 26H2 appears, click Download and install, then restart when asked.
- Run winver to confirm.
The wording can differ slightly between Windows builds.
What if the update does not appear?
Microsoft offers a feature update gradually, so some laptops see it later than others. Try these in order: finish all pending monthly updates and restart, wait a few days and check again, and make sure the laptop is not on a metered connection. Microsoft can also hold an update back from a particular device. Do not use unofficial download tools or disk images to force the update, as they can leave Windows unstable. Power cuts and Windows updates
An enablement package is short, but the restarts around it still matter. A power cut or voltage dip while Windows is configuring updates can leave a laptop looping on the restart screen. Do not switch off or unplug a laptop on a battery that is nearly empty while it shows Working on updates. Start the update when the battery is above half and, if your area has frequent cuts, keep the charger plugged in the whole time.
When to get help
Ask a technician if you see any of these:
- The laptop loops on the restart or recovery screen after an update.
- Windows asks for a BitLocker recovery key and you do not have it.
- The update fails again and again with the same error code.
- Files or programs have gone missing after the update.
