This post is for anyone with an HP laptop (Pavilion, Victus, Envy, ProBook, EliteBook or other) who uses File History to protect photos, accounts and documents, and has seen a message asking them to reconnect a drive that is already plugged in. By the end you will know what Microsoft said and on which dates, how to check your own update status, what to look at on the drive, and how to make a manual copy so your files are safe while you sort it out.
Why did File History stop backing up my HP laptop after a Windows update?
Short answer: Microsoft confirmed that after the 8 September 2026 update KB5124008, File History on some Windows PCs might be unable to create or update backups and could show a false 'Reconnect your drive' message. Microsoft fixed this in KB5124010 on 22 September 2026. Install the latest Windows updates, check the drive, then make a manual copy of your important files.
What happened, and on which dates?
File History is the Windows feature that quietly copies your Documents, Pictures, Desktop and similar folders to an external drive, so you can bring back older versions. Microsoft's support note for KB5124008, dated 8 September 2026, says that after installing it users might be unable to create or update backups, and might see a 'Reconnect your drive' message that was not accurate. The problem is not specific to HP; it was described for Windows in general, so an HP, Dell, Lenovo or any other brand may be affected. You can read Microsoft's note for KB5124008.
These are the facts as they stood on those dates. Microsoft can add further notes, so check its release health page for the current position.
How do I check my update status today?
- Open Settings, then Windows Update, then Update history.
- Look under Quality updates for KB5124010 or a later update with a date after 22 September 2026.
- If you do not see one, choose Check for updates and install what is offered. Restart afterwards.
The wording can differ slightly between Windows versions. If your HP laptop is still on Windows 11 24H2 Home or Pro, note that it stopped receiving updates on 13 October 2026, so it should be moved to a newer version first. Our guide on what to back up before moving to Windows 11 26H2 shows how to do that safely.
What should I check on the drive?
A real drive problem looks the same as the false message, so rule it out first.
- Open File Explorer and check that the drive appears under This PC, with a drive letter.
- Try another USB port, and another cable if you have one. Plug directly into the laptop rather than through a hub.
- Check that the drive has free space.
- Listen for clicking or grinding from a hard drive, and see whether it spins up at all.
Then open Control Panel, choose File History and look at the date of the last backup. If it still shows an old date after the updates, run the backup manually with Run now, or turn File History off and on again. Do not format the drive or press Stop using drive until you have copied out anything you need.
Make a manual copy first
Whatever the cause, a hand-made copy takes ten minutes and does not depend on any update.
- Plug in a pen drive or external drive with enough space.
- Copy your Documents, Desktop, Pictures and any folder where you keep accounts, photos or study material.
- Open a few copied files to confirm they open.

Power cuts, cheap cables and backup drives
In many Indian homes a power cut or voltage dip can switch the laptop off while a backup is writing, which can leave the last backup incomplete. Pulling a drive out without choosing Eject can leave the last backup incomplete or damage the drive. Keep the laptop charged during backups, eject the drive properly, and use a short, good-quality cable. Older portable hard drives are sensitive to knocks and heat in the summer months, so store them in a cool, dry place, and replace one that has become slow or noisy.
When to get help
- The drive does not appear in File Explorer on more than one USB port.
- The drive clicks, beeps or disappears while you are copying files.
- File History still shows no recent backup after all updates are installed.
- You have lost files and the only backup is on that drive.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
A backup is only a backup when you have seen it restore. Once a month, open the backup drive and bring back one file to the Desktop to prove it works. Keep a second copy of photos and accounts in another place, such as a cloud account or a drive at a relative's home, so one failure never takes everything with it.
