Three wireless display protocols explained

AirPlay (built into macOS) mirrors to Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible smart TVs. Chromecast (Google's device, plugged into HDMI) works with Windows via browser, Mac, and Android, and costs approximately ₹3,000–₹4,500 for the Chromecast with Google TV. All three add 100–400ms of latency compared to wired HDMI — imperceptible for slides and documents, noticeable for video.
Option 1: Miracast on Windows 11 (built-in, free)
What you need
A Windows 11 laptop (Miracast is built into the Intel Wi-Fi 6/6E drivers on most laptops sold after 2020) and either: a display with built-in Miracast support (many smart TVs, some newer projectors list "Wireless Display" or "Miracast" in their input menu), or a Miracast USB/HDMI dongle plugged into the projector (Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter: ₹3,000–₹4,000, or cheaper Anycast/EZCast dongles from ₹500).
Connect step-by-step
Press Win+K to open the Cast panel. Windows scans for nearby Miracast receivers — if the classroom display is on and in Miracast mode, it appears in the list. Select it. A PIN may be displayed on the classroom screen — enter it on the laptop. The laptop screen mirrors within 5–10 seconds. For school Wi-Fi with client isolation: Miracast uses Wi-Fi Direct (peer-to-peer connection directly between the laptop and receiver, bypassing the school router), so client isolation does not affect it. If the display does not appear in the Win+K list, check that the classroom display's wireless input is active.
Troubleshooting Miracast on school networks
If Miracast fails: check that the laptop has Wi-Fi enabled (even if connected by Ethernet — Miracast uses the Wi-Fi radio for the peer-to-peer link). Update the Intel or MediaTek wireless drivers from Device Manager (laptops often ship with outdated drivers that have Miracast bugs). Disable your VPN if active — many VPN clients block the virtual network interface Miracast uses.
Option 2: AirPlay on macOS (for Mac-using teachers)
AirPlay mirrors a MacBook's screen to an Apple TV (₹15,000+) or any smart TV released after 2019 that lists AirPlay 2 in its specifications (Samsung, LG, Sony, TCL TVs commonly support this). To mirror: click the Control Centre icon (top-right on macOS menu bar) → Screen Mirroring → select the TV or Apple TV name. The Mac and the TV must be on the same Wi-Fi network. If the school network has client isolation, AirPlay will not find the TV — connect the Mac and TV/Apple TV to a personal mobile hotspot instead, then mirror over that hotspot. Option 3: Chromecast (works for Windows, Mac, and Android)
A Chromecast with Google TV (₹3,000–₹4,500) plugged into the classroom projector's HDMI port is the most versatile solution for a mixed-device school environment. Windows teachers: open Google Chrome browser → three-dot menu → Cast → select the Chromecast. Choose to cast a specific tab or the entire desktop. For full desktop cast in Windows, click the Cast button → Cast desktop. Mac teachers: recent Chromecast with Google TV supports AirPlay natively — use the AirPlay menu from macOS without Chrome. Android phone/tablet: Google Home app → Cast screen. The Chromecast needs a USB power source and Wi-Fi — either the school's Wi-Fi or a personal mobile hotspot.
When wireless is not reliable enough
