Why aren't touchpad gestures working on your laptop?
Short answer: Windows 11 gesture support requires a Precision Touchpad driver — if the laptop uses an older proprietary Synaptics or ELAN driver, gestures are limited or absent. Check Settings → Touchpad to confirm whether you have a Precision Touchpad. If yes, gestures are configurable there. If no, install the manufacturer's touchpad driver — most HP, Dell, Lenovo, and Asus laptops from 2020 onward have precision touchpad hardware.
How to set up touchpad gestures in Windows 11
Step 1: Confirm Precision Touchpad and enable gestures
Go to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Touchpad. If you see Your PC has a precision touchpad, gestures are supported. Scroll down to find gesture sections. Under Taps: enable two-finger tap for right-click if not already on. Under Scroll and zoom: set scrolling direction (most users prefer Downward motion scrolls down). Confirm two-finger scroll is enabled.
Step 2: Configure 3-finger and 4-finger gestures
In Settings → Touchpad, scroll to Three-finger gestures and Four-finger gestures. Under Swipes dropdown, options include: Switch apps and show desktop, Switch desktops and show desktop, Change audio and volume, custom shortcut. Under Taps: Cortana, Action center, Middle mouse button, or custom shortcut. Recommended setup for productivity: Three-finger swipe left/right = Switch apps (Alt+Tab equivalent), Three-finger swipe up = Task View, Three-finger swipe down = Show Desktop, Three-finger tap = Action Centre.
Step 3: Install or update the touchpad driver
If gestures are missing or Settings shows no precision touchpad notice, the driver needs updating. Visit the laptop manufacturer's support page (HP Support, Dell Support, Lenovo Support, Asus Support). Download the latest touchpad driver for your specific model — this is typically listed as Synaptics Touchpad Driver, ELAN Touchpad Driver, or Intel Precision Touchpad Driver. Install it, restart, and re-check Settings → Touchpad. After a Windows 11 major update, re-checking and reinstalling the touchpad driver is almost always necessary — Windows Update frequently replaces OEM drivers with generic HID drivers that drop gesture support.
Step 4: The India angle — monsoon humidity and touchpad sensitivity
In India's high-humidity months (June–September), touchpads sometimes become hypersensitive — the moisture on fingertips causes unintended multi-touch events that trigger wrong gestures. Reduce touchpad sensitivity temporarily: Settings → Touchpad → Cursor speed (lower slightly) and Taps section → lower tap sensitivity. If the touchpad registers phantom touches without any contact (cursor moving on its own), that is a hardware issue — moisture or corrosion under the touchpad surface. Read our touchpad not working guide for hardware diagnostics, and see our touchpad repair service for physical fixes. For accidental touchpad activation while typing, the disable touchpad guide covers the Windows palm rejection settings.

When DIY ends
Seek professional help if: the touchpad cursor moves erratically or jumps without contact, touch events register in wrong locations, or the touchpad is completely unresponsive even after driver reinstall.
Typical cost in India
Touchpad replacement: ₹800–2,500 depending on brand. Touchpad cleaning (contact corrosion): ₹400–₹800. Doorstep diagnosis: ₹149, No Fix No Fee.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
The single most impactful touchpad setup change for Indian users is enabling Right-click on two-finger tap and Three-finger tap for Action Center — both reduce reliance on physical right-click (which wears out faster in heavy-use laptops) and improve one-hand navigation for daily work.
