Engineering colleges across India require Linux for subjects like Operating Systems, Compiler Design, and System Programming. Windows users who need to dual boot often encounter two failure modes: either they accidentally wipe the Windows partition, or the Ubuntu install works but the bootloader breaks and neither OS starts. This guide does the dual boot safely, in the right order, with the common pitfalls pre-empted.
What does dual booting mean?
Short answer: Dual booting means installing two operating systems on the same laptop — typically Windows 11 and Ubuntu Linux — and choosing which one to boot at startup. Each OS gets its own partition (a separate section of the hard drive or SSD). A bootloader called GRUB (Grand Unified Bootloader — the program that runs before any OS loads and shows you the choice menu) manages the selection. Dual booting gives you full native performance in both OSes, unlike a virtual machine which runs one OS inside the other.
Before you start — 4 mandatory pre-install steps
Step 0a: Back up all Windows data
Copy all important files to an external drive or cloud storage. Partition operations are generally safe but irreversible if they go wrong. Do not skip this.
Step 0b: Disable BitLocker if enabled
If your Windows 11 laptop uses BitLocker encryption (Settings → Privacy & Security → Device Encryption — if it shows "On"), disable it before resizing partitions. BitLocker + partition resize can trigger a recovery key demand on the next Windows boot. In Settings, toggle Device Encryption off and wait for decryption to complete (this takes 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on drive size). Re-enable BitLocker after the dual boot is complete if needed.
Step 0c: Disable Fast Startup in Windows
Windows 11 Fast Startup (a feature that partially hibernates Windows instead of shutting down fully) locks the Windows partition when Windows is "shut down", preventing Linux from accessing it. To disable: Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do → Turn on fast startup (uncheck). This also prevents a common issue where Windows appears corrupt when booted after Linux accessed the drive.
Step 0d: Download Ubuntu 24.04 LTS ISO and create bootable USB
Download the Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS Desktop ISO from ubuntu.com/download (approximately 5.5 GB). Use Rufus (free, Windows) or balenaEtcher (free, Windows/macOS) to write the ISO to a USB drive of 8 GB or larger. In Rufus, select GPT partition scheme (for UEFI systems — all modern laptops) and leave other settings as default.
Step 1: Shrink Windows partition to make space for Ubuntu
Press Win+X → Disk Management. Right-click the C: drive (the main Windows partition) → Shrink Volume. Enter the amount to shrink in MB. For 60 GB Ubuntu: enter 61440 MB. For 80 GB: enter 81920 MB. Click Shrink. Windows creates Unallocated space — the free space Ubuntu will use. Do NOT create a new partition in this unallocated space; leave it unallocated. The Ubuntu installer handles the rest. If Disk Management cannot shrink by the desired amount (common when system files are fragmented near the end of the partition), run defrag C: /U /V in an Administrator Command Prompt, then try again. On SSDs, the shrink usually succeeds fully on the first try.
Step 2: Boot from the Ubuntu USB
Restart the laptop. At the manufacturer logo screen, press the boot menu key: F12 on Dell and Lenovo, F9 on HP, Esc then F8 on Asus, F12 on Acer. Select the USB drive. Ubuntu boots into a live environment — a fully working Ubuntu that runs from the USB without installing anything. Try Wi-Fi, display, and keyboard in the live environment first. If they work, proceed to install.
Step 3: Install Ubuntu alongside Windows
Double-click Install Ubuntu on the desktop. Choose language, keyboard layout, and connect to Wi-Fi. On the Installation type screen, select "Install Ubuntu alongside Windows Boot Manager" (this option appears automatically when Ubuntu detects the unallocated space and the Windows partition). If this option does not appear, choose "Something else" and manually create: a root partition (type: ext4, mount point: /, size: leave 8 GB for swap), and a swap partition (type: swap, size: equal to your RAM or double for laptops with 8 GB RAM). For most engineering student laptops, the automatic option works correctly.
Step 4: After installation — GRUB and first boot
After Ubuntu installs and restarts, GRUB (the bootloader) shows a menu with Ubuntu and Windows Boot Manager. By default, GRUB selects Ubuntu after a 10-second countdown. To change the default or timeout: open a terminal in Ubuntu, run sudo nano /etc/default/grub. Change GRUB_DEFAULT=0 to GRUB_DEFAULT=2 to default to Windows (position 2 in the GRUB menu, counting from 0). Change GRUB_TIMEOUT=10 to your preferred timeout in seconds. Save and run sudo update-grub.

After first boot into Ubuntu 24.04: run sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade to install all updates. Install a development environment: sudo apt install build-essential git curl python3-pip nodejs npm. For Java: sudo apt install default-jdk. For Docker: follow docker.com's official Ubuntu installation guide (three commands). VS Code is available as a .deb package from code.visualstudio.com — download and install. When the laptop fails after dual boot
If the laptop stops booting — showing GRUB rescue prompt or blank screen — the bootloader has been corrupted, often by a Windows Update that overwrote GRUB. To fix: boot from the Ubuntu USB, open a terminal, and follow the boot-repair process (sudo apt install boot-repair && boot-repair).
