Why Phone Link crashes after Windows 11 25H2
Short answer: Windows 11 25H2 updated the Bluetooth LE (Low Energy — a power-efficient Bluetooth variant used for continuous pairing) stack to support faster cross-device features, but the updated stack broke compatibility with older Bluetooth driver versions from Realtek (RTL8723B, RTL8821CE), Intel (AX200, AX201), and Qualcomm. Phone Link relies heavily on this Bluetooth stack for its Android phone connection. The fix in nearly every case is updating the Bluetooth driver from your laptop manufacturer’s support page — not the generic driver Windows Update offers — and then re-pairing your phone.
How to fix Phone Link crashing — step by step
Step 1: Update the Bluetooth driver from your OEM
Open Device Manager (press Win+X → Device Manager). Expand Bluetooth, right-click your Bluetooth adapter, and click Properties → Driver → Driver Details. Note the driver version and date. Then go to your laptop manufacturer’s support website (HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, Acer all have driver download sections) and search for your model’s Bluetooth driver. Download the latest version — if it is newer than what Device Manager shows, install it. Restart the laptop. This single step resolves Phone Link crashes in the majority of cases we see after a Windows feature update.
Step 2: Re-pair your Android phone from scratch
If the driver update alone does not fix it, the Bluetooth pairing state itself may be corrupted. On your Android phone, open the Link to Windows app (downloadable from the Google Play Store), tap the three-dot menu, and select Remove account. On the laptop, open Settings → Bluetooth → remove the phone from the paired devices list. Also go to Settings → Phone Link → Remove phone. Restart the Phone Link app, click Add a phone, and scan the QR code on screen with the Link to Windows app on Android. A clean re-pairing clears stale Bluetooth tokens that were carried over from the pre-25H2 state.
Step 3: Repair or reset the Phone Link app
If Phone Link still crashes at launch, go to Settings → Apps → Installed Apps, search for Phone Link, click the three-dot menu, and select Advanced options. First try Repair — this rebuilds the app’s local file cache without deleting your settings. If the crash persists, try Reset — this clears all app data and returns it to factory state. If neither helps, run PowerShell as Administrator and execute: Get-AppxPackage *YourPhone* | Remove-AppxPackage, then reinstall Phone Link from the Microsoft Store. This fully removes and replaces the application, including any corrupted system entries.
Step 4: The India angle — Android-first workflows and Indian phone brands
India is a predominantly Android country. The vast majority of Indian laptop users pair their Windows laptop with a Xiaomi, Realme, Samsung, OnePlus, or Vivo phone — not an iPhone. Phone Link’s value proposition is especially high here: receiving WhatsApp messages on the laptop screen, answering calls without picking up the phone, and transferring files over Bluetooth without cables. However, Chinese-brand Android phones sometimes have aggressive battery management settings that kill the Link to Windows background process on the phone. If Phone Link keeps disconnecting rather than crashing, check your phone’s Battery saver → Background app management and whitelist Link to Windows explicitly.
