Webcam showing black in calls or Camera app?
Short answer: A laptop camera showing a black screen is almost always a software or settings issue — hardware failure is rare. Check in this order: (1) physical privacy shutter on the bezel, (2) Windows Camera access permission for the specific app, (3) camera driver status in Device Manager, (4) BIOS camera enable setting. Work through these four steps and almost always 90% of black-screen camera issues resolve without any physical repair.
How to fix laptop camera black screen — step by step
Step 1: Check the physical privacy shutter
Many business and mid-range laptops — particularly HP EliteBook, Lenovo ThinkPad, and Dell Latitude models — have a small physical slider above the screen that covers the camera lens. When closed, the camera sensor is physically blocked and every app sees a black image. Look for a tiny sliding tab in the bezel directly above the screen, usually marked with a camera icon or a red/green indicator. Slide it to the open position. If your laptop does not have a physical shutter, also check the Fn key row — some models have a dedicated camera mute key (Fn + a camera icon) that signals the driver to send a blank frame rather than physically blocking the lens. A closed shutter is the single most common "my camera stopped working" scenario we get on WhatsApp.
Step 2: Windows camera permission settings
Windows 11 and Windows 10 have a layered camera permission system. The master switch and per-app toggles must both be On. Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera. At the top you will see Camera access — this must be On. Scroll down to Let apps access your camera — also On. Below that, find the specific app that is showing black screen (Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Chrome, etc.) and make sure its individual toggle is On. If the app is not listed, it is a desktop app rather than a Store app — for desktop apps, the master toggle is sufficient. After enabling the permissions, close and reopen the app completely. Also check that no antivirus software on the laptop has a webcam-blocking feature enabled (this is common with Kaspersky Total Security and Norton 360 — both have a "webcam protection" setting that blocks camera access by default). Our guide to laptop webcam not working covers additional scenarios including Zoom-specific camera conflicts.
Step 3: Reinstall the camera driver
Open Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager). Expand Cameras (in Windows 11) or Imaging Devices (older Windows). Your camera should be listed as "Integrated Camera" or with the OEM name. If there is a yellow warning triangle, right-click and choose Update driver → Search automatically. If the camera device is missing entirely (not listed under any category), open the View menu in Device Manager and choose Show hidden devices — it may be hidden. Right-click and choose Enable device. For the most reliable fix, download the camera driver directly from HP Support Assistant, Dell Drivers & Downloads, or Lenovo Vantage and install the OEM-specific version rather than relying on Windows Update's generic driver.
Step 4: The India WFH angle — BIOS camera and IT-managed laptops
India's large WFH workforce includes many employees using company-issued or refurbished laptops where the IT department has disabled the camera via BIOS for security policy compliance. This is more common than people realise — we see it weekly. The camera shows as "missing" in Device Manager because Windows cannot see a device that is disabled at firmware level. To check: restart the laptop and enter BIOS (F10 on HP, F2 on Dell/Asus, F1 or Fn+F1 on Lenovo). Look for an Advanced or Security menu with entries for "Integrated Camera", "Webcam", or "Camera". If it shows Disabled, change it to Enabled and save. For company-issued laptops, this setting may require IT administrator access — contact your IT helpdesk. For personal refurbished laptops, this is fully accessible to the owner. Our guide to BIOS navigation shows how to move through BIOS safely on each brand.
When to call a laptop repair service
When DIY ends
Call a technician if: all four steps above fail and the camera still shows a black screen; Device Manager shows the camera with an error code that does not resolve after driver reinstall (Code 10, Code 43); the camera was physically damaged by a liquid spill; or the bezel around the camera shows cracking that may have dislodged the camera module connector.
Typical repair cost in India
Camera driver fix / settings resolution: no charge (included in ₹149 visit). Physical webcam module replacement: ₹800–₹2,000 for Windows laptops. MacBook FaceTime camera replacement: ₹3,500–₹7,000.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
At least two calls a week come from professionals who are three minutes before a video interview or client meeting with a black camera screen. The privacy shutter is always the first thing we ask about. Check it before opening any settings menu. It saves more time than anything else in this guide.
