Why does Microsoft Edge use so much RAM?
Short answer: Edge (like Chrome) uses a multi-process architecture — each tab, extension, and background service runs as a separate Windows process. This improves stability (one crashing tab does not kill the whole browser) but multiplies RAM usage. Additionally, Edge's Startup Boost loads browser processes at Windows startup even when you are not using Edge, consuming 150–300 MB constantly. Disabling Startup Boost and enabling Sleeping Tabs are the two fastest fixes.
How to reduce Microsoft Edge RAM usage
Step 1: Disable Startup Boost
Type edge://settings/system in the Edge address bar and press Enter. Under Optimize performance, toggle off Startup boost. This immediately frees 150–300 MB of background RAM the next time you restart Windows. Edge will take 1–2 extra seconds to open, which is a worthwhile trade-off on an 8 GB laptop with multiple applications running.
Step 2: Enable Sleeping Tabs with a short timer
On the same settings page (edge://settings/system), enable Save resources with sleeping tabs and set the timer to 5 minutes. Sleeping Tabs (also called tab freezing) suspend the JavaScript and rendering engine of tabs you have not looked at recently, releasing their allocated RAM back to the system. A tab with a large web application (Notion, Figma web, GST portal, Tally on web) can hold 200–400 MB each. With 10 tabs open — common for Indian students and professionals managing multiple browser workflows — sleeping tabs can collectively free over 1.5 GB. The tab reloads from cache when you click it, adding 1–2 seconds of reload time.
Step 3: Use Edge's Efficiency Mode on battery
Efficiency Mode limits Edge's CPU usage and aggressively freezes background tabs when your laptop is on battery power. Still on edge://settings/system, set Optimize performance when device is plugged in and set the mode to Maximum savings on battery. This is particularly valuable during India's summer months when battery performance is already reduced by heat. Edge will throttle background tab activity, freeing both RAM and CPU that other applications can use.
Step 4: Audit and remove RAM-heavy extensions
Open Edge's built-in task manager: click the three-dot menu → More tools → Browser task manager. Sort the list by Memory (private). Extensions — particularly ad blockers, translation tools, screen recorders, and productivity tools like Loom or Grammarly — can each use 50–200 MB. Identify which extensions you actually use daily versus ones installed and forgotten. Disable unused extensions: click the three-dot menu → Extensions → Manage extensions, and toggle off anything you do not use regularly. Removing two or three unused extensions frequently frees 300–500 MB on laptops that have accumulated extensions over time. Step 5: The India angle — 8 GB RAM laptops and tab-heavy workflows
The Indian education, UPSC prep, and SME professional user base tends to keep 15–30 browser tabs open simultaneously — GST portal, banking, email, WhatsApp Web, YouTube, and reference documents all at once. On Windows 11 laptops with 8 GB RAM (DDR4 or DDR5), this leaves Windows itself, Office, and antivirus competing with Edge for the remaining memory.
