Why dual monitors are trickier on Snapdragon X Elite than Intel laptops
Short answer: Snapdragon X Elite laptops (the Qualcomm ARM-based Copilot+ PCs — laptops with on-device AI accelerators, typically the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge, HP OmniBook X, and Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 6) run Windows on ARM64 architecture. Most USB-C docks and hubs that drive dual monitors use either DisplayPort MST (Multi-Stream Transport — hardware that multiplexes multiple display signals over one cable) or DisplayLink (a software-based approach requiring a driver). On Snapdragon X Elite, DisplayLink requires a specific ARM64 driver that many cheaper docks do not ship with, causing one or both monitors to not be detected.
How to set up dual monitors on Snapdragon X Elite — step by step
Step 1: Verify your laptop's USB-C port capabilities
Not all USB-C ports on Snapdragon X Elite laptops are equal. Check your model’s spec sheet. Most Snapdragon X Elite laptops (HP OmniBook X, Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge, Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 6) have 2–3 USB-C ports, each supporting USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 with DisplayPort alt-mode (a feature that lets the USB-C port carry a video signal directly, without a dock). The number of simultaneous external displays possible from a single USB-C port is limited by DisplayPort bandwidth — a single USB-C port can drive two 1080p displays via MST or one 4K display, but not two 4K displays simultaneously from one port. Look up your specific model on the manufacturer’s site to see the exact display output specification.
Step 2: Choose the right docking solution
Option A — Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 dock with MST: this is the most reliable method. Docks like the Anker 777 (₹14,000–₹18,000 in India), Belkin Connect Pro, or CalDigit TS4 use hardware MST to drive two or three displays from a single USB-C connection. No additional drivers needed — Windows on ARM recognises them natively. Option B — Two separate USB-C cables: if your laptop has two USB-C ports and both support DisplayPort alt-mode, connect one monitor to each port directly via USB-C to DisplayPort cables. This is the simplest and most reliable approach — no dock, no driver, just two cables. This is what we recommend first because it eliminates all dock-related compatibility questions. Option C — DisplayLink hub: works but requires downloading the ARM64 DisplayLink driver from displaylink.com (version 11 or later). Generic hubs sold on Flipkart and Amazon India under ₹1,500 frequently have outdated drivers bundled and will not work on ARM Windows without the correct driver. Install the ARM64 driver first, then connect the hub.
Step 3: Configure display layout in Windows
Once both monitors are connected and detected, go to Settings → System → Display. You should see three displays listed (the built-in laptop screen plus the two external monitors). Drag them to match your physical arrangement. Select Extend these displays for a multi-monitor workspace, or Duplicate if you want the same image on all screens. Set your primary display (the one where taskbar and start menu appear) by clicking on the display rectangle and enabling Make this my main display. For best performance on Snapdragon X Elite, set the built-in display to its native 120 Hz refresh rate and the external monitors to their native resolution and refresh rate — do not force a higher refresh rate than the monitor supports, as this can cause the Qualcomm driver to drop to software rendering for that display.
Step 4: The India angle — monitor availability and USB-C cable quality
Two India-specific notes. First, dual-monitor productivity setups in Indian WFH setups often use older 1080p or 1440p monitors that connect via HDMI — not DisplayPort. If your monitors are HDMI-only and your dock has HDMI outputs, the dock likely uses DisplayLink internally (because HDMI is not a native alt-mode protocol over USB-C). This works fine with the ARM64 DisplayLink driver installed, but it is important to understand why the driver is needed. Second, USB-C cable quality matters significantly on Snapdragon X Elite. Only use USB4-rated or Thunderbolt 4-rated cables (marked on the cable packaging) for the laptop-to-dock connection. The cheap ₹149–₹299 USB-C cables from Indian retailers are often charge-only cables with no data or video lanes — they will power the dock but no display output will appear.
