If you are a 19-year-old college student in Musheerabad, your XPS 13 9310 may be the laptop you rely on for lectures, notes and projects. Now the battery drains within an hour, or the laptop only works on the charger. Replacing it is not one choice but three: original, compatible or refurbished. This post explains what each word means, what Dell itself states about replacement parts, and how to compare two quotes fairly before you approve one.
Which battery should I choose for my XPS 13 9310?
Short answer: If your laptop is still under Dell warranty or a Dell protection plan, start with Dell. If not, ask every provider to name the part type and its warranty in writing, then compare the total cost, not only the part price. Stop charging at once if the battery looks swollen.
The three words mean different things. An original battery is made or supplied for the laptop by the manufacturer. A compatible battery is made by another company to fit the same model. A refurbished battery is a used one that has been tested or reconditioned. None of these words, on its own, tells you how long the part will last. The warranty and the seller's honesty about the part type matter more.
What does Dell state about replacement parts?
Dell's India Terms and Conditions of Sale, Service and Technical Support state that a replacement part is warranted for 90 days from its installation, or for the remainder of the warranty term of the product it goes into, whichever is longer. What can an independent repair offer?

What should I compare between two quotes?

This is an illustration, not a real bill. Suppose two quotes arrive for the same laptop. Quote A lists an original battery with a longer part warranty. Quote B lists a compatible battery with a shorter one. Quote B looks smaller at first glance. But if the shorter warranty ends before the battery shows its first sign of wear, the saving may disappear. Equally, if the original part costs far more than you want to spend on an older laptop, a compatible or refurbished part with a clearly stated warranty can be a sensible, honest choice. How does Kerala's humidity and heat affect a battery?
Warm, humid weather is hard on laptop batteries. A laptop left on a bed, in a bag in a hot auto-rickshaw or on a charger through a long power cut recovery will run warmer than it should. Heat wears the battery faster over time. Never leave a laptop charging inside a bag or under a pillow. If you travel by train or bus with the laptop in a bag, switch it off first. What if the battery is swollen?
A swollen battery is a safety issue. Do not press it, puncture it or keep charging it. Signs include a trackpad that clicks oddly or lifts, a gap along the case, or a keyboard that bulges. Unplug the charger, switch the laptop off and avoid using it. Move it to a cool place away from anything flammable. Then get it checked. If it is under Dell cover, contact Dell first. Otherwise, a technician can remove it safely.
When to get help
- The laptop shuts off at 20 to 40 per cent charge.
- It works only when plugged in.
- The case, trackpad or keyboard looks lifted or bulged.
- The battery drains in an hour or two, though it was fine a year ago.
