This post is for anyone with a Dell Inspiron, Vostro, Latitude or similar Dell PC who noticed that the July 2026 Windows update never showed up, or who read that Dell PCs were affected. You will learn what Microsoft actually said, how to see your own update status in a few clicks, and which signs mean it is time to ask a technician. You do not need to be technical to follow the steps.
Why is the July Windows update not offered on my Dell PC, and what should I do?
Short answer: On 14 July 2026 Microsoft said the July update, KB5101650, may not be offered on some Dell PCs with an Intel processor. The cause was an incompatibility with a driver called Intel IPF (Intel Innovation Platform Framework, software that helps manage power and performance), reported by Dell. On 18 July 2026 Microsoft released a fix, KB5121767, for the affected devices. If your PC is not affected, no action is required.
What did Microsoft say, and when?
Microsoft listed the symptoms as unexpected shutdowns, reduced performance, overheating and shorter battery life. For the fix, Microsoft named builds 26100.8894 (Windows 11 24H2) and 26200.8894 (Windows 11 25H2). It said the fix addresses an issue affecting a limited number of devices with an Intel IPF driver, which could cause changes in performance, power consumption or system behaviour. Microsoft's pages do not give a number of affected PCs. It also said that if your device is not affected, no action is required.
These statements were true on the dates above. Known issues can be resolved or changed later, so use the checks below to see the position today. Microsoft's pages are KB5101650 and KB5121767.
How do I check my own Dell PC?
Step 1: Look at Windows Update
- Open Settings, then Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates and let it finish.
- Open Update history and look for KB5101650 or KB5121767. The wording can differ slightly between versions.
Step 2: Read the status on Microsoft's page
Search for Windows release health on Microsoft's support site and open the page for your Windows version. It lists known issues with their current status, so it will tell you more than any blog post can on a later date.
Step 3: Look for the symptoms
The IPF problem was linked to unexpected shutdowns, slow performance, overheating and a shorter battery life. A PC that runs normally and simply waits for an update is not necessarily affected. Our page on Dell random shutdowns explains other causes of these symptoms.
What should I avoid doing?
- Do not download updates from unofficial websites or use tools that force an update. A wrong file can leave Windows unable to start.
- Do not remove the Intel IPF driver or turn off Dell software just to see whether the update appears. Microsoft's route is the update itself.
- Do not switch the PC off while an update is installing.
Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro stopped receiving updates on 13 October 2026. If your Dell is still on 24H2, moving to a newer version matters more than one missing July update. Back up first with our guide to what to back up before the 26H2 upgrade.
Power cuts and Windows updates in India
Large updates take time on patchy broadband, and a voltage dip or power cut in the middle of an install can interrupt it and leave Windows unable to start. Keep the charger connected, and if you use a desktop, a UPS (a small battery unit that keeps power steady) gives you time to finish safely. Start the update when you are not about to leave for work.
When to get help
- The Dell shuts down unexpectedly, gets very hot or loses battery quickly.
- An update keeps failing, or Windows loops through restarts.
- You see a blue screen or the PC stops at the Dell logo.
- You are unsure whether to proceed and have important files on the PC.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
A missing update is not a fault in itself. Check the update history, read Microsoft's status page and back up your files. Make changes only when a symptom tells you something is wrong. If you want a second opinion, send us a photo of your update history on WhatsApp at 7702503336.
