Picture a dentist in Banjara Hills, aged 41, whose Dell Latitude 5420 held the day's appointments and patient schedules. This morning it will not power on: no light, no fan, nothing. She has heard that a repair might mean replacing the whole board, which sounds costly. Before approving anything, she wants to know how a board replacement differs from a smaller component repair and what any quotation should say. This post gives her, and you, a plain checklist.
Does a Latitude that will not power on need a new board?
Short answer: not necessarily. A laptop that shows no sign of life can have a fault in the charger, the battery, a small part on the board, or the board itself. Ask for a diagnosis that says which, and a quotation that lists the part and the work. Use Dell's coverage first if a plan applies; otherwise compare written scopes.
What is the difference between a board and a component repair?
The mainboard (also called the motherboard) is the large circuit board that connects the processor, memory, storage and power. A board replacement swaps the entire board for another. A component-level repair finds the single small part that has failed, such as a charging circuit part, and replaces only that.
Neither is automatically better. A component repair is not possible when the damage is spread across the board or the part cannot be sourced. A board replacement is not always necessary just because the laptop is silent. The honest answer comes from testing the power path, which means checking charger, battery, charging port and the circuits that feed the board.
How does Dell handle an out-of-warranty fault?
Dell's India page says out-of-warranty repair is arranged primarily online through Dell Support Home. You enter the Service Tag, the code printed on the laptop, and pick a paid service option. For hardware, Dell describes a diagnostics step: it sends a box and shipping label, generally within one to two business days after the service is booked, so the laptop travels by mail. Dell then diagnoses and gives the repair details and cost first. It states that paid repair work is completed only after the quote is approved and payment is completed.
The same page states that the diagnostics fee is nonrefundable, whether or not the repair is approved, and that a Collect and Return option exists in some regions. Dell also states that a replacement part carries a warranty of 90 days from installation, or the remainder of the product's warranty, whichever is longer. Read Dell's out-of-warranty repair guide for current wording.
What can an independent repair offer for the same fault?
Laptop Repair World can test the power path and tell you whether a component-level repair is possible. The result goes into a written quotation listing parts, labour, GST and the visit fee, before any work begins. Each part is named as original, compatible or refurbished, with its own warranty. If testing finds another fault, a revised quotation is approved before any further paid work.
We record condition, serial number and accessories when the laptop is collected, whether from our MG Road store in Secunderabad, on a doorstep visit (laptop repair in Banjara Hills) or by courier from anywhere in India. The repair itself carries a 30-day warranty subject to terms; a replaced part has its own warranty, stated on the quotation. No Fix No Fee means no repair charge if the fault is not fixed. See our Dell not powering on page and Dell motherboard repair page.
How do you compare two quotes like for like?
The exact quote comes after diagnosis and is shared in writing for your approval.
What moves the price of a no-power repair?
- Whether the fault is in the charger, battery or board.
- Assembly against component: a whole board costs differently from a small part plus skilled labour.
- The part type: original, compatible or refurbished.
- GST, labour and any visit or delivery fee.
A very low quote that does not name the part is not comparable to a detailed one; ask what exactly is being replaced. Our guide to Dell motherboard repair cost explains these items in more detail.
Power cuts, surges and a Latitude that will not start
In many Indian cities, voltage dips and surges after power cuts are common. A cheap or damaged adapter can send an unsteady supply into the laptop, and the charging circuit can be one of the parts affected. Use the original Dell adapter where possible, plug into a surge-protected strip, and try the laptop with a known good adapter before assuming the worst. Do not open the laptop yourself or use unknown adapters, since a wrong voltage can damage the board further.
An illustrative case
This is a typical scenario, not a record of a real customer. A clinic owner's Latitude goes dark after a storm. She holds no Dell plan and the laptop is out of warranty. She asks Dell's service for a diagnosis and also asks an independent repairer for a written assessment. Both quotes arrive. She compares part named, part warranty, taxes, and what happens if a second fault appears, and chooses the one whose scope is clearest to her.
When is Dell's own coverage the better route?
If the Latitude is within warranty, or you hold a Dell plan that covers the fault, start with Dell. Check your coverage by Service Tag, and read your plan terms, before any outside repair. Our Dell service centre versus independent repair page sets out both routes.
When to get help
- No lights, no fan and no charging light on the laptop or adapter.
- The laptop shut down suddenly and will not restart.
- A burning smell, or damage after a liquid spill or power surge.
- A quote that does not say which part is being replaced.
For a doorstep visit in Hyderabad, see our Secunderabad page. The visit carries a ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us. The visit fee is waived only when you approve the repair.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Before any repair, try one thing: remove the charger, hold the power button for about fifteen seconds (the steps can differ by model), then try a known good adapter. Report exactly what you saw. Then ask every repairer to put the diagnosis, the part and the part warranty in writing. A clear quote is a better guide than a quick one.
