If your Dell Inspiron, Vostro or Latitude will not start Windows, the first worry is often the files, not the laptop. A shop owner's invoices, a student's project, a family's photographs: these matter more than the machine. This guide explains the common symptoms, the few safe checks you can make yourself, and what a technician does to get the files out, so you know what to avoid doing in the meantime.
How do you get files off a Dell laptop that will not boot?
Short answer: First stop restarting and avoid reinstalling Windows. Check the charger and any BitLocker (Windows' built-in drive lock) prompt. If the laptop still will not start, the drive can be taken out or read outside the laptop, copied as an image first, and the files recovered from that copy. The sooner you stop, the better the chance.
What do the symptoms mean?
What can you safely check yourself?
1. Stop the power cycling
Each forced shutdown can risk more damage to Windows files and strain a weak drive. Switch the laptop off and leave it for a while.
2. Try a different charger and a power reset
A failing adapter can cause start-up trouble. Unplug the charger, remove any USB devices, hold the power button for about fifteen seconds (the exact steps can vary by model), then reconnect and try once.
3. Note any BitLocker prompt
If a BitLocker screen appears, do not guess keys. Find the recovery key on your Microsoft account or a printout. Our guide to BitLocker drive recovery explains where keys are kept.
4. Use the Dell start-up tests
Tap F12 at the Dell logo to reach the start-up menu, where a built-in diagnostics option is usually listed. The wording can differ between models. If it reports a drive error, switch off and ask for help.
Do not choose 'Reset this PC', 'Remove everything' or a clean Windows install to get the laptop working again. It erases the drive, and the files you wanted may be gone for good.
What happens at the bench?
- The technician reads the symptoms and checks power and display.
- The drive is tested outside the laptop, connected to a recovery system.
- An image copy of the drive is made first, so the original is read as little as possible.
- Your files are copied from the image onto a new drive, and you check them before anything else happens.
If the drive itself is badly damaged, recovery may be partial or not possible, and a technician will tell you plainly after testing. Read our guide on when DIY recovery makes things worse before trying software tools on a failing drive.
Why a clean install erases your data
Installing Windows afresh formats the partition (the section of the drive Windows lives in) and writes new system files over it. The old files are no longer listed, and new data can overwrite them. That is why fast, well-meant fixes can turn a recoverable problem into a permanent loss.
Power cuts, heat and courier
Sudden power cuts can switch a laptop off while it is writing to the drive, which can damage Windows files. Heat and dust also stress drives in the summer. If you send the laptop by courier, pack it with the charger removed, in a snug box with padding, and note the serial number on the label. Ask whichever service provider you use how your data will be handled, since repairs sometimes involve replacing a drive.
When to get help
- The laptop loops, shows blue screens or stays black after a few careful tries.
- A BitLocker screen appears and you do not have the key.
- The laptop makes clicking sounds or shows a drive error in diagnostics.
- The files matter and you want to avoid any risk.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Once the files are safe, the laptop can be repaired or Windows reinstalled without worry. Do things in that order. Also keep a regular backup afterwards, on an external drive or cloud storage, so the next start-up problem is only an inconvenience.
