A ₹900 charger that cost ₹18,000 to fix
Short answer: A MacBook Pro M3 arrived with complete charging failure and a slightly swollen battery. The owner had bought a replacement MagSafe charger from an online marketplace for ₹900 six weeks earlier, when the original was misplaced. On the bench: the charge management IC (the chip on the logic board that regulates how current from the charger is delivered to the battery cells) had thermally failed. Two of the four battery cells showed internal resistance values outside specification, indicating early-stage swelling. Repair total: ₹18,200. The ₹900 saving on the charger had cost 20x in board repair.
What the bench found
The counterfeit charger teardown
We opened the charger for inspection after the owner consented. A genuine 96W MagSafe charger contains a properly rated transformer, active power factor correction (PFC) circuitry, and a USB Power Delivery (PD) negotiation chip that handshakes with the MacBook to deliver the correct voltage and wattage. The counterfeit contained a simplified, unregulated switching circuit with no PFC stage and no authentic PD negotiation chip. It delivered voltage that varied between 18V and 22V depending on load, when the MacBook expects a tightly regulated 20V±0.5V. This voltage variation is what killed the charge IC over six weeks.
Charge IC failure and battery damage
The charge management IC on this MacBook Pro M3 showed thermal stress marks under microscope — the kind that indicate sustained operation outside safe parameters. The IC had failed open-circuit, which meant the charging path was completely broken. Battery cells 2 and 3 of the four-cell pack showed elevated internal resistance, a sign that the variable input voltage had caused lithium plating on the cell anodes (the negative electrodes inside the battery cells). These cells were not imminently dangerous but would have continued degrading. Battery replacement was the right call alongside the IC repair. Repair and verification
Charge IC micro-soldering replacement: ₹8,500. Battery replacement: ₹9,700 (genuine Apple-grade cells, BMS calibrated). Post-repair testing: the MacBook charged at full 96W, battery health reported at 100% on fresh cells. The owner was advised to source a genuine replacement charger from an authorised reseller. Spotting a counterfeit MagSafe
The most reliable check is price: a genuine Apple 67W USB-C Power Adapter with MagSafe cable runs ₹6,900–₹7,500 from official Indian channels. The 96W variant is ₹8,900–₹9,500. Any listing claiming to be genuine Apple for under ₹2,500 is not genuine. Physical checks: genuine cables have no seam line along the housing; the MagSafe connector magnet has consistent attraction symmetry; the Apple logo on the power brick is a precise laser etch, not a printed sticker. When to call a laptop repair service (and what it costs in India)
Signs to act on
If your MacBook charges more slowly than it did at purchase, if the MagSafe connector feels warm after 30 minutes, or if macOS shows a battery health warning in System Settings, bring it in for charge path assessment. Acting at the slow-charging stage costs significantly less than acting after a failed IC or swollen battery.

The cost of a genuine MagSafe charger is a fraction of a charge IC repair, and the charge IC repair is a fraction of a full board replacement. We see counterfeit charger damage on at least two MacBooks per month. The pattern is consistent: owner loses the original charger, buys a cheap replacement on impulse, and six to twelve weeks later is in for a repair that costs 10–20x the price they saved on the charger. The maths are unambiguous.
