How to copy files off a MacBook that will not start

LR LRW Engineer Team ~6 min read

Key takeaways

  • A MacBook that will not start does not always mean the files are gone. Try Recovery, then Share Disk from a second Mac (Apple silicon), then check Time Machine and iCloud.
  • On recent MacBooks the storage chip is fixed to the main board. If the board has a fault, files cannot be moved by taking out a drive, so a technician must work on the board.
  • If the Mac makes grinding or clicking sounds, gets very hot, or smells of burning, stop pressing the power button and switch it off. Repeated attempts can make the damage worse.
  • A bench data copy reads the files out and saves them to a drive you supply. The quote is shared with you for approval before any work begins.

Your MacBook shows a black screen, a folder with a question mark, or a circling progress bar that never ends, and your assignments, accounts, photos or office files are inside. This post is for students, professionals and families who are not technical. By the end you will know the safe order of things to try, what to check before you assume the worst, and how to tell when the job needs a technician and not another restart.

Can I copy my files if the MacBook will not start?

Short answer: often yes. First check whether a copy already exists in Time Machine (Apple's built-in backup) or iCloud. If not, try macOS Recovery, and on Apple silicon Macs try Share Disk from Recovery, which lets a second Mac read the files over a cable. If none of this works, the fault may be on the main board and needs a technician.

What should I check before trying anything?

  • Time Machine. Look for an external drive you may have plugged in over the months. If one exists, the files may already be safe on it.
  • iCloud. On another device, sign in at iCloud.com with your Apple Account and look at iCloud Drive and Photos. Desktop and Documents may be stored there if you switched that on.
  • Other copies. Email attachments, WhatsApp chats, pen drives and college portals often hold older versions of important files.

If a copy turns up, you may only need to restore it later onto a repaired or replacement Mac. If you want to see how a backup habit would have saved this day, read our post on backing up before a repair.

How do I open Recovery on a MacBook?

Recovery is a small rescue environment stored on the Mac, separate from your normal files. The way in depends on the chip.

Type of MacHow to open Recovery
Apple silicon (M-series chip)Switch off. Press and hold the power button until startup options appear, then choose Options
Intel MacSwitch on and hold Command and R together until the Apple logo appears

The wording can differ slightly between macOS versions and models. If Recovery opens, you can run First Aid in Disk Utility (a check that repairs minor drive errors) and then try starting normally. If Recovery will not open at all, or the Mac restarts by itself, go to the next section.

How does Share Disk work on an Apple silicon MacBook?

Share Disk lets your MacBook act like an external drive for another Mac. You need a second Mac, a USB-C or Thunderbolt cable that carries data (not a charge-only cable), and your Mac password.

  1. Start the problem MacBook into Recovery as above.
  2. From the menu bar, choose Utilities, then Share Disk.
  3. Pick the disk, choose Start Sharing and enter the password if asked.
  4. Connect the cable to the second Mac. The shared disk should appear in the Finder there, often under Locations or Network; you may be asked to connect and enter your Mac password. The wording can differ between versions.
  5. Copy the folders you need to the second Mac, or to an external drive.

What if it is an Intel Mac?

Share Disk is the Apple silicon method. Many Intel Macs can instead be used as an external drive through Target Disk Mode: switch the Mac on while holding the T key, then connect it to a second Mac with a suitable cable. Whether this works depends on the model and the macOS version, so check Apple's support page for your Mac before you rely on it. If neither method works, treat it as a hardware problem and do not keep trying.

If the disk is locked with FileVault (Apple's drive encryption), the files cannot be read without your password or recovery key. Our post on FileVault recovery explains the options.

Why can a technician not just take the drive out?

In recent MacBooks the storage is built into the main board and cannot be removed like the drive in an older laptop. On Apple silicon Macs the storage is also managed by the chip on the same board. That means a fault on the board can cut off access to the files even when the storage itself is fine. Only someone who works on boards, with the right equipment, can attempt a repair or a read-out. Our page on MacBook motherboard repair covers that kind of work.

What happens in a bench data copy?

  • The technician checks for liquid, burn marks and power faults before anything is connected.
  • The Mac is brought to a state where the files can be read, using a method suited to the fault and your model.
  • The files are copied to a drive you provide or one agreed with you.
  • You are told what could and could not be read before the Mac is handed back.

Not every case can be recovered, and the exact quote comes after diagnosis. It is shared for your approval before any work starts.

Power cuts, heat and monsoon damp: what to avoid

In many Indian cities, voltage dips and power cuts are a fact of life, and a MacBook that was charging during one can fail to start afterwards. Humidity in the monsoon months can add to the damage if liquid has got inside. Do not charge a wet MacBook, and do not dry it with a hair dryer or place it in rice. Switch it off, disconnect the charger and bring it in. If you live outside Hyderabad, you can send the Mac by courier from anywhere in India, packed with the charger left out.

When to get help

Stop and ask a technician if:

  • The Mac makes clicking, grinding or buzzing sounds.
  • It gets hot quickly or smells of burning.
  • Recovery will not open, or Share Disk does not show the disk.
  • The Mac was exposed to water, tea or coffee.

Do not keep restarting the Mac again and again, and do not reinstall macOS or erase the disk. Erasing removes the files for good. A note from the LRW Engineer Team

Write down your Apple Account email and your Mac login password today, and keep the recovery key somewhere safe if you use FileVault. A useful step is a backup you make before trouble starts. If trouble has already started, stop retrying, keep the charger away and bring the Mac in as it is.
