Why is Windows Recall crashing on my Copilot+ PC?
Short answer: Windows Recall — the AI feature on Copilot+ laptops (Snapdragon X Elite, Intel Core Ultra 2, AMD Ryzen AI 300) that continuously screenshots your screen and indexes it for search — can crash when its snapshot database becomes corrupted or when the NPU (Neural Processing Unit, the dedicated AI chip) driver conflicts with Windows. The symptom is often high background CPU or disk usage, a frozen Recall interface, or a "Recall encountered an error" notification. Disabling or resetting Recall resolves the crashes without affecting any other Windows functionality.
How to fix Windows Recall crashing on Copilot+ PC
Step 1: Disable Recall to stop crashes immediately
Open Settings (Win+I) → Privacy & security → Recall & snapshots. Toggle Save snapshots to Off. This immediately stops the Recall background process from taking screenshots and running AI indexing — the crashes stop within seconds of disabling. If you want to fully remove the background task from the scheduler as well, open Task Scheduler (search in Start), navigate to Task Scheduler Library → Microsoft → Windows → WindowsAI, and disable all tasks in that folder. Restart to confirm the process is no longer running.
Step 2: Reset the Recall snapshot database
If you want to keep using Recall but resolve the crash, the issue is likely a corrupted snapshot database. Open File Explorer, navigate to C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Local\CoreAIPlatform.00\ (you may need to enable hidden folders: View → Show → Hidden items). Delete the UKP folder — this contains the entire Recall snapshot database and its index. Restart. Windows rebuilds an empty database on next login. Re-enable snapshots in Settings if you had disabled them. The crash should not recur unless the database becomes corrupted again — which usually happens when the disk is nearly full or when Recall is interrupted mid-snapshot by a power cut.
Step 3: Update the NPU driver if crashes continue
Recall uses the NPU (Neural Processing Unit) — the dedicated AI accelerator chip — to run its image analysis locally. On Snapdragon X Elite laptops, this is Qualcomm's Hexagon NPU. On Intel Core Ultra 2, it is Intel's integrated NPU. On AMD Ryzen AI 300 devices, it is the XDNA 2 NPU. If the NPU driver is outdated, Recall's AI processing can fault and crash the application. Go to your laptop manufacturer's support page, search for your model, and install the latest AI Platform or NPU driver. This is separate from the GPU driver and is sometimes listed as "AI Engine" or "Windows Studio Effects" driver depending on the OEM.
Step 4: The India angle — DPDP and privacy context
India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 (DPDP) — the Indian equivalent of GDPR — treats continuously recorded screen data as personal data. Although Recall stores data locally and is not sent to Microsoft servers, corporate IT policies in Indian companies (especially BFSI, pharma, and government-adjacent firms) are increasingly disabling Recall at the device management level via Microsoft Intune. If your employer's IT policy has disabled Recall, you may see the feature as greyed out in Settings — this is intentional and is not a crash.
