Can the NPU in a Copilot+ PC be repaired if it fails in India?
Short answer: No — the NPU (Neural Processing Unit) in every Copilot+ PC is integrated into the main processor chip, not a separate component. It cannot be independently replaced. However, true NPU hardware failure is extremely rare. The vast majority of "Copilot+ AI features not working" complaints are driver, firmware, or region-restriction issues — not hardware failure. This is the same situation as Apple's Neural Engine inside M-series chips: it is a core part of the processor architecture, not an add-on.
This design produces maximum efficiency and minimum footprint, but it means any NPU failure is effectively an SoC failure — which requires either motherboard replacement or (in very specific circumstances at a BGA specialist) SoC reballing, which is neither guaranteed nor economical on a chip this complex.
Step 2: What actually causes "NPU not working" on Copilot+ PCs in India

Physical NPU failure from hardware damage — a voltage spike, severe drop, or liquid — would manifest not as "AI features not working" but as the entire machine failing to boot or producing BSODs with hardware-level error codes. If your Copilot+ PC boots normally, browses, and runs standard apps but AI features are absent, the NPU hardware is almost certainly intact.
Step 3: What Copilot+ PC motherboard repair costs in India
On the off chance that SoC-level failure does occur (confirmed by professional diagnosis), the repair path depends on the machine. Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 motherboard replacements cost ₹45,000–₹75,000 at Microsoft AASP. Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge and equivalent Snapdragon X Elite laptops are similarly priced. Dell XPS 13 9350 (Intel Lunar Lake) motherboard replacement runs ₹35,000–₹55,000. These are all outside the range where independent chip-level repair shops can substitute — without official SoC replacement parts, no independent shop can fix a dead SoC.
Step 4: The India angle — heat and Copilot+ AI workload throttling
India's summer temperatures create a unique challenge for Copilot+ PC NPU workloads. Running sustained AI inference — Cocreator in Paint, real-time Recall indexing, live captions — generates heat from the NPU die that, combined with India's ambient temperatures of 38–42°C, causes some thin Copilot+ laptops to thermally throttle the NPU frequency after 5–10 minutes of continuous AI work. This is not failure — it is thermal protection working correctly. Keeping the bottom vents clear and using the machine on a hard flat surface (not a bed or lap) prevents most throttling.
